US climate envoy John Kerry told Bloomberg TV that the transition to a zero-carbon economy faces numerous challenges including misinformation campaigns and litigation from local communities who oppose renewable power projects.
“There is no question, we’re going to get there – the only question is if we’re going to get there in time to not be ravaged by the worst consequences of the climate crisis,” Kerry said.

It’s been four years since the conflict in Syria reached an uneasy stalemate. The country, which borders Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Jordan, had laid relatively dormant as the Middle East convulsed following the Oct. 7, 2023 massacre of Israelis by Hamas.

,1,French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance and the left-wing New Popular Front are weighing whether to pull candidates from the second round of the legislative election on Sunday to keep the ascendant far right out of power.
Marine Le Pen’s National Rally and its allies dominated the first round of voting Sunday, locking up 33.2% of the vote, according to interior ministry figures. The New Popular Front got 28% and Macron’s coalition got 20.8%.
Le Pen’s margin of victory was smaller than some polls had indicated. That, together with the news that mainstream parties were exploring ways to lock her group out of power, drove an initial market rally before investor optimism about the outcome began to fade.

A central pillar of our modern justice system, prisons loom large in the popular imagination, inspiring whole genres of literature, music, and film; and even entire schools of philosophical thought. They are entire insular worlds unto themselves, potent symbols for the nature of freedom, justice, and humanity itself. But more than just institutions or buildings, prisons are also a form of technology, whose function is to contain, control, and - hopefully - reform and rehabilitate large numbers of people as efficiently as possible. As a result, over the past two centuries prison design has seen plenty of innovation, ranging from the practical to the ingenious to the downright bizarre. And few prison designs were stranger than an 1880s contraption that enclosed its prisoners in what can only be described as a giant rotating squirrel cage. While several of these innovative structures were constructed across the midwestern United States, they proved impractical and reliable, and became but a minor yet fascinating footnote in the history of criminal justice. This is the strange tale of the rotary jail.

,1,ELON Musk was spotted looking down in the dumps on Thursday morning after shockingly losing $18 billion of his net worth.
The Tesla CEO was photographed in Los Angeles, California, on January 25 after spending a night at a luxury hotel.
A somber Musk wore a plain black long-sleeve shirt and pants as he walked the streets of the City of Angels.
He stuck his tongue to the inside of his cheek, looking seemingly upset.
The melancholy appearance may have something to do with the Tesla CEO losing some of his assets.
Musk took a $18.8 billion hit to his net worth on Thursday, according to Forbes.
The loss comes after Tesla's stock sank 13.2% to 180.38.
However, Musk continues to remain the world's richest person with an estimated net worth of $203.6 billion.
The news comes just one day after Tesla announced its vehicle production growth rate is projected to drop in 2024.
Tesla's announcement follows the company's stocks plummeting after the EV giant's reported Q4 earnings missed estimates.
A press release shared on Wednesday stated that the company's "vehicle volume growth rate may be notably lower than the growth rate achieved in 2023."
This indicates that the company would not reach estimates of 2.19 million for 2024, per Yahoo Business.
The company also announced that revenue for Q4 was $25.17 billion, compared to an estimated $25.87 billion.
While Tesla's vehicle production growth rate is projected to decrease in 2024, Musk noted that the company is set to start production on a next-gen vehicle in the second half of 2025.
"We are focused on bringing the next-generation platform to market as quickly as we can, with the plan to start production at Gigafactory Texas.
"This platform will revolutionize how vehicles are manufactured," Tesla said on an earnings call, per Yahoo Business.
"We're very far along on our next-gen low-cost vehicle; we're really excited about this.
"This is a revolutionary manufacturing system, far more advanced than any other in the world," Musk said on the call.

,1,South African Justice Minister Ronald Lamola outlined his country's case at the United Nations’ top court Thursday accusing Israel of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.
South African lawyers said during the opening arguments that the latest Gaza war is part of a decadeslong oppression of the Palestinians by Israel. Israel has vehemently denied the allegations. South African lawyers asked judges to impose binding preliminary orders on Israel, including an immediate halt to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Minister Lamola said the Oct. 7 Hamas attack from Gaza into southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people and saw some 250 others taken hostage by militants is "no justification for any form of genocide."
"We believe that without the intervention of this court from the international community, we will see the total destruction of the Palestinian people in Gaza," he added.
Israel’s air, ground and sea assault in Gaza has killed more than 23,000 people, two-thirds of them women and children, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory. The count does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

A large airliner carrying more than 300 passengers exploded today at an airport near Tokyo, just a day after a brutal 7.6 magnitude earthquake devastated huge swathes of Japan 's west coast.
Shocking footage showed the Japan Airlines jet engulfed in a raging inferno as it sat on the runway at Haneda Airport, in Ota City, Tokyo, with gouts of flame seen pouring out of the passenger windows.
The airliner collided with a coastguard plane as it travelled down the runway, Japanese TV reported, with the collision causing the plane to erupt into flames.
One eyewitness wrote on X: 'A plane exploded in front of me...' and shared a clip of the passenger jet on fire.
Fire crews were deployed to the scene immediately, with footage from Japanese broadcaster NHK showing how firefighters were desperately trying to extinguish the flames with multiple hoses.
