President-elect Donald Trump’s defense secretary pick, Pete Hegseth, paid a woman who accused him of sexual assault in a settlement agreement that included a confidentiality clause, according to Hegseth’s attorney.
Attorney Timothy Parlatore said Hegseth denies assaulting the woman and has characterized the October 2017 incident in Monterey, California as a “consensual sexual encounter.”
Monterey city officials last week confirmed that local police had investigated “an alleged sexual assault” involving Hegseth. The city declined to release information about the victim and said it would not release the full police report or comment further on the investigation, citing state public records law.
Hegseth has not been charged in any criminal case or named as a defendant in any civil lawsuit in connection with the incident.
In 2020, Hegseth learned the woman was considering filing a lawsuit, Parlatore said in statement provided to CNN.
Parlatore said the payment to the married woman was of “a significantly reduced amount” and that Hegseth, a veteran turned Fox News host, settled because it was during the “Me Too” movement and he didn’t want to lose his job at the network if the accusation became public. The attorney’s statement did not say how much Hegseth’s accuser was paid in the settlement.
Parlatore said Hegseth felt that he was the victim of blackmail.
CNN spoke briefly with the alleged victim on Thursday. She became visibly distraught at the mention of Hegseth’s name but declined to be interviewed without first contacting her attorney. She said she did not know what she was authorized to say.

,1,Putin Arrives in North Korea, Vows Stronger Ties With Kim Jong Un
Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in North Korea, signalling stronger ties between the two nations as Moscow seeks weapons to support its war in Ukraine. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un greeted Putin upon his arrival in Pyongyang early Wednesday. They conversed briefly before heading to the Kumsusan State Guest House, where Putin is staying. The two leaders discussed enhancing North Korea-Russia relations. This visit marks Putin's first trip to North Korea since 2000 and is notable for both leaders, especially given Kim's isolation since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The GOP field is now narrowed to three candidates and winning the nomination is a longshot for two of those three. The incumbent Democrat, President Biden, is not competing in the state after national Democrats tried removing New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation status. The Hill's Cate Martel explains the distinct absence of the usual frenzy.

JULY 2022 INFLATION READINGS :
The HIGHEST category throughout this last month was almost completely isolated to ENERGY, with an overall increase of 7.5% month over month. This includes a whopping 10.4% increase in the cost of energy commodities, and an 11.2% increase in the cost gasoline. The other type of utility gas was also up by 8.2%…leading, of course, to that headline number increasing SO MUCH higher than expected.
https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm
On top of that, food also increased by another 1% this month, while new and used vehicles increased by another 0.7% and 1% respectively.
Finally, rental costs increased by 0.8%, which was the largest monthly increase since April of 1986….and, medical care rose by 1.9% in dental services, which was the largest monthly change EVER recorded.
Now, the good news is that, when you EXCLUDE food and energy prices…Core Inflation STILL came in high, at 5.9%, BUT, it’s at the same pace as the month prior - suggesting that - maybe - inflation is beginning to peak?
After all…so far, in the month of July…oil prices have fallen below $100 per barrel…car repos are beginning to add slightly more inventory on to the market…and, commodities are falling on fears of a recession. That, in turn - should soon cause CORE CPI numbers to fall, assuming there isn’t another black swan event that we can’t predict…and, at the end of the day: Energy prices are being skewed by overseas tension…which, the Federal Reserve will have very little of an effect on.
The truth is, inflation numbers like these are a SLIGHTLY lagging indicator…and, even though we can CERTAINLY see that prices are going UP…July’s data is going to be a LOT more telling now that people are cutting back, and some sectors are beginning to soften.
HOWEVER…let's be real: if you own stocks, and you intend to hold them for the next few decades…then, why would it matter if the prices drop further? You should see this as: There’s a Black Friday sale, I’m going to continue buying as I would, normally - and now, I happen to get a good deal. If prices then drop even further, same thing…I’ll continue buying.

(Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath) (Alba)
Time is tight, so I will cut to the chase. I pay tribute to the hon. Member for North West Leicestershire (Andrew Bridgen) for his courage and determination on this important matter. I also challenge the right hon. Member for Knowsley (Sir George Howarth) on his assertion that these were so-called experts at that meeting. They are world-renowned experts in their field; that is just a matter of observable fact.
I want to focus on the safe use of novel mRNA agents and on concerns over their alleged role in driving excess deaths. I repeat a point that I have made previously in this place and directly with the Minister: any agent has the potential to cause harm or injury to the subject. For the avoidance of doubt, the position I have taken is based on decades of involvement in the management and delivery of clinical trials. Politicians who dismiss the data and emerging clinical evidence are acting in a wholly irresponsible manner, and posing a real threat to the duties of honesty and candour at the heart of good clinical practice. If substantiated, the concerns surfacing around falsified or concealed data are the most serious that I can imagine.
I have worked in the same institution as Professor Dalgleish, and his credentials are impeccable.
Addressing this matter is necessary because we are talking about the standards on which good clinical practice, or GCP, is based. GCP is not about a nice bedside manner or knowing what treatment to prescribe; it is a set of internationally recognised ethical and scientific requirements, which must be followed when designing, conducting, recording and reporting on clinical trials that involve people, and have their origin in the declaration of Helsinki.
The rights, safety and wellbeing of trial subjects are the most important consideration, which should prevail over interests of science and society, including commercial or political interests, and I will conclude with a reflection on that important principle. The foundation of good clinical practice is under threat. In their December 2023 pathology research and practice paper on gene-based covid-19 vaccines, Rhodes and Parry gave the following warning:
“Pandemic management requires societal coordination, global orchestration, respect for human rights and defence of ethical principles. Yet some approaches to the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by socioeconomic, corporate, and political interests, have undermined key pillars of ethical medical science.”
None of these clinical experts are quacks or conspiracy theorists. As the Government said so often during the pandemic, we must follow the science
