Corinthians Boxing Club’s Head Coach Kevin Corcoran told The Hard Shoulder about Mr Hutch’s generosity to their community organisation.
“Gerald bought the building in Buckingham Street there 25 years ago outright and he gave us that building for one euro a years’ rent - that's all we have to pay,” he said.
“Now, he doesn't collect the rent, obviously, but he gave us the building to run as a boxing club free of charge, basically.”
Mr Corcoran said the club would not exist with Mr Hutch’s help.
“Everyone knows rents, especially in the inner city, are crazy at the moment,” he said.
“We probably be paying between €2,000 to €4,000 per month rent for that building, and we couldn't afford that.
“We charge the kids €2 per night for training.”
The coach said Mr Hutch very rarely visits the club, but when he’s in Ireland he always stops by.
“When he comes home, he pops down and says hello, he comes in and says hello to the lads and has a look at the kids training,” he said.
Mr Corcoran said The Monk is a “very popular man” in the area.
“There's no other man, TD, anything that would buy a building and give it away to the local community,” he said.
Mr Corcoran said Mr Hutch’s popularity could be due to his help with the boxing club, but he’s sure “people have their own reasons”.
The local community aren’t concerned with Mr Hutch’s possible involvement in organised crime, he said.
“We only see the side of Gerald as the very helpful person that he is,” Mr Corcoran said.
“We only know the man that helps us out, gives us a club for free.”
Aside from Mr Corcoran’s hopes to see The Monk in the Dáil, his wishes for the next Government include “more grants”.
“In our club, we'd like to get some more grants for the club to help us out with more equipment and more stuff like that,” he said.
“We don't pay rent in our club, but we have massive bills - we have water bills, electricity bills that we have to get paid.”

,1,The Taoiseach says a bomb threat at his home last night was “utterly unacceptable.”
Speaking on arrival at the European Council in Brussels this afternoon, Simon Harris said the threats on his home “cannot be allowed to continue”.
“I have young children; I have a wife, and this is an utterly unacceptable situation,” he said.
The threat came after an unknown person rang the Samaritans helpline and said a bomb had been placed outside Mr Harris’ Wicklow home.
The caller provided a code word which led to Gardaí immediately carrying out searches at the property.
The searches uncovered no device and Gardaí are now treating the call as a hoax.
Mr Harris said hoax is not an appropriate word to describe the threat because he has “no doubt these things are done to intimidate and upset”.
'This can't be allowed to continue'
It is the third major incident at his home in recent weeks – after two incidents in which masked individuals gathered outside Mr Harris’ home protesting Ireland's immigration policies.
Mr Harris said the incidents should not be described as protests.
“If masked men tuned up outside your house, it wouldn’t be described as protest,” he said.
“It is not protest when it happens outside my house either.
“You know, this situation can’t be allowed to continue.”
The threat came a matter of months after a man was found guilty of calling in a bomb threat to the Justice Minister Helen McEntee’s home.

,1,Hundreds of flights at risk as Aer Lingus pilots begin work to rule. Anton Savage is joined by Noel Cunningham (Ambassador for Harvey’s Point Donegal) and Eoghan Corry (Air and Travel Magazine) ti discuss the ongoing actions by Aer Lingus pilots.
Pilots at Aer Lingus have begun an indefinite work-to-rule in a pay dispute with the airline.
It followed separate talks with the Labour Court which has told both parties it cannot intervene at this time.
The work-to-rule means pilots will not work overtime, not accept amendments to published rosters, not log into the Aer Lingus portal or answer phone calls outside of work hours.
Tens of thousands of passengers’ flights have been cancelled due to the indefinite work-to-rule.
Aer Lingus also announced the cancellation of a further 50 flights for July 1st and 2nd.
Pilots are also holding an eight-hour strike on Saturday from 5am to 1pm.
In a statement the airline said "implementing these cancellations is to enable us to protect as many services as possible for as many of our customers as possible".
"Customers whose flights are impacted will be communicated to directly via email/SMS, or through their travel agent, advising of their options," it said.
"While we will endeavour to re-accommodate customers where possible the levels of disruption may not make this possible."
The announcement comes as Taoiseach Simon Harris called on Aer Lingus and the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (IALPA) to “dig deep” in attempting to come to a resolution in their heated industrial dispute.
The industrial action is being taken by members of IALPA which is seeking a pay increase of 24% for Aer Lingus pilots.

,1,Legendary GAA commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh has died at the age of 93.
The Kerryman first began working for RTÉ back in 1949.
He commentated on his last All-Ireland final when Cork defeated Down in the football championship decider in 2010.
Ó Muircheartaigh was born in Dún Síon outside Dingle and worked as a teacher before becoming a full-time broadcaster in the mid-1980s.
Over a career spanning nearly 60 years, Ó Muircheartaigh became the voice of the GAA for fans up and down the country.
In a statement, the Taoiseach Simon Harris said the word ‘legend’ is almost not enough to describe Ó Muircheartaigh.
“His voice, his colour, his excitement, his love of sport, his turn of phrase were often as exhilarating as the action he was describing on the pitch as the audience held its breath for what Mícheál would say next,” he said.
“For a generation of the Irish diaspora, Mícheál was also a treasured link and the voice of home as they listened to GAA across the world.”
The GAA Players Association said Ó Muircheartaigh “had a voice that conjured up magic”.
“He created masterpieces with his words and he enhanced memories for generations," it said.
"To players, he was a true friend. Our deepest condolences to the family of Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.
"A legend of Gaelic games. A legend of Ireland. RIP."
Ó Muircheartaigh died this morning, surrounded by family at the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

,1,The woman who yesterday saw her attacker walk free from court after he pleaded guilty to beating her unconscious on the street has said she was “completely horrified” by the sentence – but not surprised.
On Lunchtime Live this afternoon Natasha O’Brien said she had spent the weeks leading up to the hearing preparing herself for a soft sentence.
She said victims of violent crime in Ireland see their attackers walk free far too often, adding, “It's the system of justice we are the true victims of”.
The 24-year-old said she came to court hoping to prove that there are repercussions for intentionally harming others – but warned that the “exact opposite message” has now been sent out.
Yesterday, 22-year-old soldier Cathal Crotty of Parkroe Heights, Ardnacrusha, County Clare walked free from court after he was handed a three-year suspended sentence for the attack on Ms O’Brien.
Ms O'Brien suffered a broken nose, bruising, nightmares and panic attacks after the unprovoked attack.
Hours after the attack, Mr Crotty boasted about what he had done, writing to friends on Snapchat, "Two to put her down, two to put her out."
Delivering the sentence, Judge Tom O'Donnell said Crotty's actions were "utterly appalling" but said he was not imposing an immediate jail sentence because he had 'no doubt' it would end his army career.
“I just remember walking out of that courtroom and I had so many emotions pumping through my body,” Ms O’Brien told Lunchtime Live.
“I was just completely horrified and appalled.
“I couldn't believe the reason for the sentence that was given by Judge O’Donnell.
“That it was so important that this young, promising male did not lose his career in the Irish Defence Forces.
“In my victim impact statement, I had expressed very, very clearly that my mental health declined so badly [after the attack], that I couldn’t complete basic tasks, let alone show up to work.”
Ms O’Brien said she had to restrain herself in court as the sentence was announced.
“I really, really had to bite my tongue because I was telling myself, ‘I'm in court’,” she said.
“It was my first ever time appearing in court and I was telling myself, ‘Don’t try and shout at the judge or don't try and do something.
“I walked out of that courthouse and I felt so, so ignored and so defeated, but the most heartbreaking part is that I wasn't actually surprised."

,1,Philip Ryan, Political Editor of the Irish Independent joins Pat Kenny as they react to the news that Eamon Ryan is stepping down as the leader of the Green Party.
Eamon Ryan has confirmed that he is stepping down as Green Party leader.
Minister Ryan said he was leaving his role to “pass the torch to a new generation of leaders, confident in the strength and values I have seen built up in our party over all these years”.
He said he would not be standing for re-election to the Dáil.
He will remain in his role as leader and minister until a new party leader is elected – and will spend the remaining months of this Government in “whatever new role” the next party leader chooses for him.
"Sustainable and secure"
Minister Ryan said he was extremely proud of what the Green Party has achieved in Government – noting that he has helped “set the country on a course to a more sustainable and secure future”.
“Social integration is integral to green politics,” he said.
“Investing in public transport and safe streets helps the disadvantaged the most.
“Relying on our own renewable energy keeps money in our country and creates good jobs that last.
“Paying to restore nature will help marginal farming systems most of all.
“This is the best for rural as well as urban Ireland.”
Minister Ryan said his biggest regret is that under his watch, “a narrative has taken hold that we are not concerned about rural Ireland, that solutions are costing people and that we are not connected to the man and woman on the street.”
He said none of that is true and warned that divisive politics will not work if we are to see “the scale and speed of change that has to be made”.
"Our motivation comes from a love of creation and our place within it,” he said.
“We seek benefits for every place and every community in the transition we need to make.”
Social media
He said convincing people of the party’s vision has not been easy “because we've also been the subject of a relentless attack, particularly on social media”.
“It seems, at times, that we are subject to coordinated attacks in the comments section, following any posts we made,” he said.
“I decided to ignore the worst comments even when it included vile statements about my own recently deceased father some five years ago.
“But the level of invective has only increased, especially in the last year, and I think it poisons the well of public thinking about our agenda and not just our party.
“That's one of the reasons why it's so important that we cherish and build strong, impartial and independent media and that we put the future funding in place so that people can trust that they're getting accurate information on what is happening in our world.
“You could despair about the future of our democracy if you were just to live in that algorithm-driven, polarising online world; however, I am so hopeful about what is to come next.”
New generation
He said he spent the last few days talking to the candidates who put themselves forward for the Green Party in the recent elections and was inspired by their continued determination to serve the public.
“In leaving my leadership role, I will be asking a new generation of young people to take up this honourable public role by joining our party and joining us in meeting and listening to the public when the next election comes, as well as making our case,” he said.
Minister Ryan said he will continue to work on climate action – but cannot continue to work the long hours that being a public representative involves.
Career
Eamon Ryan has served as a councillor, TD and Minister during his 30-year career.
He has led the Green Party since 2011.

,1,Branding rugby as child abuse has led to a heated debate between callers on Lunchtime Live.
Researchers from University of Winchester in the UK have advised that permitting children to take part in impact sports, such as rugby and boxing, should be considered a form of abuse to the child's brain.
A new study examined the strength of medical evidence showing impact sports cause serious brain injuries and concluded that this harm "runs counter to existing laws around child abuse."
University of Winchester Professor of Sport Eric Anderson, who led the study, told the show there is more and more proof.
"It's entirely fair because it's entirely abusive to a child's brain," he said.
"I know it's a highly-emotive topic, people love rugby etc, but people also love tag rugby.
"Tag rugby doesn't intentionally structure trauma into a child's brain.
"We have decades of research on this now, and every new research project that comes out is worse and worse.
"The [US] National Institutes of Health and the Centres for Disease Control have both stated, definitively, that there's a cause and effect relationship between the micro-trauma that occurs as a regular occurance in children's tackle rugby, boxing or other high-impact sports and long-term brain trauma.
"This is not contestable, medically speaking.
"The problem is we have people who love these sports and don't want to believe the research, don't trust the research or don't know anything about the research".
Prof Anderson said management of contact is beside the point.
"The purpose of the sport is to collide, to bring another child down," he said.
"That has trauma to the brain as a part of it.
"I understand that the culture loves rugby, but a child's brain doesn't care about the culture.
"A child's brain is traumatised when it's hit - full stop.
"You're also very well aware of the fact that many professional rugby players, hundreds now, are suing World Rugby, the Rugby Football Union and other rugby bodies because of the long-term brain trauma.
"So, we can no longer stick our necks in the sand and not see the problem".
Prof Anderson said dementia is now being diagnosed in 18-year-olds, which is only found in high-impact collision sport athletes.
Boxing coach Liam Morley Brereton said there is more care given than ever before.
"I don't know why he says he's a professor in sport, he's scaremongering every parent," he said.
"In boxing you have medicals before, in no other sport does your kid need a medical before they take part even in the gym session, never mind the boxing.
"In kids boxing every one of them are medicled every year; they'd be medically [checked] three months before a competition and they're medically checked the day of the competition.
"If they win that fight, they're medically checked the next morning.
"If a punch is landed anywhere hard... you're checked after the fight.
"I used to ride horses as a kid and I got more falls; are we just going to stop playing every sport?"

,1,During Leaders' Questions, Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty TV licence to be scrapped as public has 'lost faith' in RTÉ.
It comes after it emerged that an exit package for RTÉ's former Chief Financial Officer was not approved by its Executive Board.
It is the latest revelation in the long-running payments scandal at the broadcaster.
An independent report by McCann Fitzgerald has uncovered that the exit deal for Breda O'Keeffe was not considered by the board at all.
The report examined the Voluntary Exit Programmes (VEPs) operated at the broadcaster in 2017 and 2021.
It found that over 250 applications were submitted under the 2017 programme and 176 were successful.
Cost savings of 80% or more were identified in the vast majority of successful applications, it said.
The report found that Ms O'Keeffe's application "was the only one not considered and approved by the Executive Board as was required under the rules of the 2017 VEP" and that "the terms of the 2017 VEP were not complied with."
The report concluded that the "failure of RTÉ to follow the rules of its scheme rests with it."
In 10 cases, applications for exit under the 2017 VEP were approved and termination payments, including statutory redundancy payments, were paid.
The report found that these departures "did not… satisfy the requirements of a redundancy within the meaning of the Redundancy Payments Acts."
It also said there were questions over whether RTÉ "should not have applied the tax exemption applicable to statutory redundancy payments to the payments received by some or all of these individuals."
It added that this question would be "a matter for the Revenue Commissioners to determine."

,1,Justice Minister Helen McEntee will today sign orders to add two more countries to the list, which already includes Georgia, Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia and South Africa.
A safe country is one where the Government believes there is generally no persecution, torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or threat of violence through armed conflict.
Citizens of these countries are still entitled to apply for asylum in Ireland; however, they must be able to prove that their country is not safe for them in terms of their own personal circumstances.
In recent years, the Government has sped up checks an applicants from safe countries – and decisions are now made on their cases within a maximum of 90 days.
Botswana and Algeria are the latest countries to be added to the list in what is being seen by some as a bid to crack down on the numbers arriving here seeking International Protection.

,1,Footage shows the moment a migrant boards a truck going into the Port of Calais
Barry Moore of BM Logistics on the fines faced by companies and drivers working internationally.
Reports of truckers being offered up to €25,000 to smuggle illegal migrants has been branded as 'appalling' by a driver.
The Irish Daily Mail has claimed drivers around the country have been offered the money to smuggle illegal migrants into the European Union.
Truck driver Cyril McGuinness told Lunchtime Live he hasn't been offered money but it's not something new.
"I think it's appalling," he said.
"There has been smuggling since the time of horses and carts.
"Most professional hauliers would have nothing to do with that, whether it's people or drugs or whatever.
"But there are people that will smuggle".
Mr McGuinness recalled the case of 39 people found dead in the back of a lorry in England in 2019.
"Anyone that does it, anyone that accepts it should be locked away and the keys thrown away," he said.
Mr McGuinness said his company has 'given up' work on the continent because of issues in ports like Calais.
"We were in a position where we'd be coming from the continent, Italy or Germany, and our drivers couldn't sleep on the road," he said.
"The curtains would be cut, fellas would jump in.
"You would be inspected by the French police, you would be inspected by the UK customs in Calais.
"Then if you get off the boat in Dover, if somebody had cut a whole in your trailer and got in unknownst... you were fined €2,000 for each man, woman and child.
"We'd have to drive literally from the German border non-stop to the boat and get straight on the boat.
"We gave up doing that work".
Mr McGuinness said they had "no back up from customs or police" if they found stowaways in their trailer.

,1,Sinn Fein TD Imelda Munster addressed the Dáil during a Motion on Gaza and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Her remarks as follows:
"Minister, the horrors that Israel have been committing in Gaza since October are frankly indescribable. And I think I speak for most people when we say that we watch TV screens and we actually can't believe we're watching, the utter barbarity of it, but also the fact that nobody's doing anything to stop it. The civilian population of Gaza have been subject to the most depraved, indiscriminate bombing campaign in modern times.
"And not satisfied with bombing babies and children and women and other civilians in their bed, killing over 25,000 people in just over three months. Israel has destroyed the hospitals and the entire healthcare system in Gaza, ensuring that there is no help coming for these people. They've also inflicted untold pain and suffering on the population through their various methods of collective punishment, denying people access to water, to hygiene, to aid and displacing 85% of the population.
"They're bombing hospitals, schools and refugee camps. And these are war crimes. And that's a fact. And it's been pointed out previously that Ireland was very forthright in its support for the Ukrainian case against Russia at the ICJ in 2022, and rightly so. And at the time the then Foreign Minister, Simon Coveney, said: ‘As a party to the Genocide Convention and the strong defender of the international rules based system, Ireland has a strong interest ensuring that the convention is properly interpreted and applied.’
"And again, rightly so. So why do the same rules not apply to Palestine? Why the naked hypocrisy, cowardice and meekness from so-called world leaders who choose to look the other way while Israel commits the most evil of war crimes daily? Why when South Africa took a stand against Israel did others, including our government, not follow their example?
"Why did the Tanaiste say last night that the government would review matters? Does he think the people of Palestine have time to wait around while he dithers? Does he not see what we see every single day happening before our eyes, the slaughter of the Palestinian people by Israel? We can't stand idly by and watch a country committing war crimes before our eyes.
"We need to support the South African case and anything less is utter hypocrisy and cowardice. And I just have to say this. I keep thinking all through this conflict, if I was a minister in government or a member of government that was watching this and decided not to act. How would I explain that to future generations and even grandchildren?"

,1,Strong winds are likely across Ireland from Sunday as Storm Isha hits.
A Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for the entire country from 11am on Sunday until 6am on Monday.
Met Éireann is warning of very strong and gusty southwest winds, along with heavy rain.
Potential impacts include significant coastal waves, difficult travelling conditions and loose objects becoming displaced.
An Orange warning is also in place for Northern Ireland.
Storm Isha formed off the coast of North America and will continue to deepen as it tracks towards Ireland and the UK this weekend.
Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather told Lunchtime Live warnings are likely to be upgraded.
"Storm Isha is going to come across the Atlantic [and] get powered up by a jet stream that's gone very, very strong indeed," he said.
"It's going to bring us some very strong wind on Sunday, through Sunday and into Sunday evening and early Sunday night.
"Met Éireann, for now, have issued a Yellow wind warning for the entire country - but that is likely to be updated as we get closer to the event.
"There is a risk that some areas could be upgraded because some of the weather models are showing some very strong winds, but there's also going to be a lot of rain".

,1,A high-visibility policing operation in Dublin city centre will continue, the Justice Minister has said.
Helen McEntee was speaking amid concerns that the initiative, introduced after a number of violent incidents in the capital, would be wound down.
Funding of €10 million was provided last year to increase the Garda presence on the streets.
Dubbed 'Operation Citizen', the funding saw an increase in deployment of public order units and Roads Policing units, with armed Gardaí on standby.
Minister McEntee told The Hard Shoulder she has received assurances that high-visibility policing will be maintained.
"Firstly just to reassure people that there will continue to be that high visibility policing," he said.
"I think people have really noticed, not just since Christmas but since the summer, that increased visibility.
"That in itself just provides reassurance to people.
"The Garda Commissioner has assured me that that will continue.
"That we will continue to have that high visibility, that we will continue to use overtime as is needed, and that whatever resources are needed to keep it that presence that that will be maintained".
Minister McEntee said seeing uniformed Gardaí is making a difference in the capital.
"I think certainly people feel the increased presence and they feel that sense that they're seeing more uniformed Gardaí," he said.
"Often it is just seeing that uniform, because you do have Garaí that are working not in uniform.
"But when you put them in uniform, that presence suddenly becomes much more enhanced.
"Some of that is what has happened as well where you have Gardaí that wouldn't have been in uniforms are now in uniforms.
"Certainly there has been maybe a feeling of a greater presence around the city centre, but beyond as well.
"That will continue and it's to reassure people that will continue".
Minister McEntee said it is about more than just a Garda presence.
"Safety is not just about policing, it's about our landscape, it's about dereliction, it's about rubbish collection, it's about lighting, it's about the business that are there," she said.
"It's about investing in an area as a whole, what kind of services do we have?
"We know that there is a concentration of services for vulnerable people in our city centre, how do we deal with that and how do we support them and understand what the problems are?"

,1,The Dáil was suspended as a number of People Before Profit TDs called for a debate on Gaza.
Last week, the International Court of Justice began its hearings in the Hague, after the South African Government said the actions of the Israeli Defence Forces over the past three months amount to a genocide against the people of Gaza.
"Entire multi-generational families will be obliterated," Irish lawyer Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh told the court.
"Yet more Palestinian children will become WCNSF - Wounded Child No Surviving Family - the terrible new acronym borne out of Israel's genocidal assault."

,1,The family of the man Cork’s Páirc Uí Chaoimh is named after says they were "not informed" of a shock proposal to rename the stadium.
Cork GAA is set to rename the venue SuperValu Páirc as part of a €1m sponsorship deal with the owner of the supermarket brand.
County Board delegates will be asked to ratify the deal at a meeting this evening.
Páirc Uí Chaoimh was first opened in 1976 before undergoing a €110m redevelopment in 2015 to become Ireland's fourth largest stadium.
It’s named after former GAA Director General Pádraig Ó Caoimh who, during his 35-year tenure, doubled the number of registered clubs in the country.
On Lunchtime Live today, his grandson Donal Ó Caoimh said he was completely against the potential renaming of Cork’s foremost stadium.
“It’s galling to me that SuperValu is considering making the eradication of my grandfather’s legacy a condition of sponsorship,” he said.
“My grandfather's story inspires young players to dream but the gateway is now open for the sale of our heritage and narrative for profit.
“If you take away the absence of focus on money and corporations from games, you’ve lost what makes the GAA unique.”

Five units of Dublin fire Brigade (DFB) are at the scene alongside one ambulance.
A Garda cordon is also in place.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area with road closures in place on Terenure Road East, Highfield Road and Orwell Road.
DFB is warning people that “Smoke is drifting across the area” and is urging people to “take precautions if you are affected”.

,1,Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman has said an increase in asylum seekers means the Government must “take accommodation where we can find it”.
2024 has begun with protests emerging across the country against the use of properties in local areas to house asylum seekers.
Most recently, protestors in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, have criticised plans to house 160 families seeking international protection in the Racket Hall hotel.
Mr O’Gorman told The Anton Savage Show housing female asylum seekers and families is a top priority for the Government.
“We have seen an increase in the number of female and family applicants over the last number of weeks - we’re under real pressure here,” he said.
“That’s why accommodation in Roscrea will be used for families.
“We've had to take accommodation where we can find it because of the significant need and increase in demand both in terms of Ukrainians and international protection applicants.”
Mr O'Gorman said he sympathises with concerns that the only hotel in Roscrea will now solely be used as accommodation for asylum seekers.
“I completely understand [when] a hotel in a town has its use changed, it as an impact,” he said.
“That’s why it’s important we are able to better plan where we locate accommodation.
“The approach we have taken is a reactive approach.

,1,What is the story with the Presidential primaries in America?
Simon Tierney has the details.
As the race to the White House beings, US President Joe Biden has said Donald Trump is "willing to sacrifice democracy" as the Supreme Court confirms it will rule whether Mr Trump is eligible to run.
The Supreme Court decided it would consider Mr Trump’s appeal to it after the state of Colorado disqualified him from appearing on the State's primary ballot over his role in the 2021 Capitol riots.
Mr Trump is also appealing a ruling in Maine that disqualified him from ballots there.
The Trump campaign said it “welcomes a fair hearing at the Supreme Court to argue against the bad-faith, election-interfering, voter-suppressing" ruling.
“President Trump is dominating the polls, and the Biden presidency has failed all Americans,” it said.
At his first campaign stop in Iowa, where the first Republican presidential primaries will take place, Mr Trump took aim at President Biden.
“Biden’s record is an unbroken streak of weakness, incompetence, corruption and failure,” he said.
“Other than he’s doing quite well.”
Speaking in Pennsylvania on, Mr Biden said the 2024 presidential election will not just choose a president but determine the course of democracy in the US.
“Whether democracy is still America's sacred cause is the most important question of our time,” he said.
“Donald Trump is about him, not America, not you.
“He's willing to sacrifice our democracy.”

,1,The Green Party would be willing to go into Government with Sinn Féin after the next election, Eamon Ryan has told The Pat Kenny Show.
Minister Ryan said his party “cannot afford to pick and choose who we go into government with”, considering the scale of the climate emergency.
The Green Party leader also said he would favour an election date early in 2025.
Asked whether he had any reservations about one day working with Sinn Féin in Government, Minister Ryan said: “Our world is burning. It is an absolute crisis, an emergency.”
“This is the decade of change to try and stop that,” he said. “We cannot afford to pick and choose who we go into government with.”
“We need to involve everyone in the decarbonisation of our society – to be part of our part of the solution.”
Asked to confirm whether he would be “happy to coalesce with them in some form”, he simply answered: “Yes”.
Minister Ryan also said he hoped the next election would be held in 2025, despite growing speculation it could be called towards the end of this year.
“[I would prefer the] early part of next year and I’ll tell you why,” he said.
“There are not many stable governments around the world at the moment. The world is in a fairly shocking state and we do have a stable and effective government to my mind.
“We do have our differences in Government but we work well together. I don’t see why we shouldn’t.
“This year, I think, we can build 40,000 houses – why wouldn’t we do that? Focus on that, build the 40,000 houses and then go to the people next year on the promise of building more after that.”
The Green Party leader agreed that there is some concern about the toxicity surrounding the US Presidential Election contaminating the electoral process here.
“Yes, there is and I think part of that is the concern about what sort of disinformation and fake news we are going to see online,” he said.
“What sort of nonsense are we going to see, which really does pollute the people’s [point of view].”
He said the best way to combat online disinformation is to ensure Ireland has a good quality media industry.
“I think one of the most important things this Government has to do in the first half of the year is, make sure we have proper funding for broadcasting and media,” he said.
“But also, you stand up for our democratic constitutional system.
“You stand up for Irish politics. We have, listen, warts and all, we have loads of failings, but our country is not badly served, to my mind, by our constitutional democratic system.”
Minister Ryan said he does not plan to put his name forward for the Irish Presidency and expects to continue leading the Green Party into the next election.

,1,Hospital emergency departments are dealing with a significant surge in flu and COVID cases, the HSE’s Chief Clinical Officer has warned.
Dr Colm Henry is urging anyone who suffers a slip or a fall to attend an injury unit instead of the hospital to free up space.
It comes as over 400 patients were on trolleys across the country this morning waiting for a hospital bed.
On The Pat Kenny Show today, Dr Colm Henry said this is down to illnesses spreading more quickly at this time of year.
“We’re seeing a significant surge in COVID-19 and flu cases,” he said.
“Flu cases are up 92% in terms of attendance at emergency departments last week while COVID is up 77%.
"What we have seen in comparison to last year is a bit of a lag as last year's peak in cases had come a couple of weeks earlier.
“We’re now expecting flu cases to peak in the next week or two but even after the peak there will be an ongoing number of high cases.”
Meanwhile, Dr Henry said a highly transmissible COVID variant has now cemented itself as the “new kid on the block”.
“It’s not more dangerous than others but it is more transmissible,” he said.
“This one has been able to displace the other variants because of how transmissible it is and how quick it is to catch.
"It’s rippling through countries in Europe and the United States right now – we expect cases to remain high from now through to spring.”
Latest vaccines
Dr Henry said it's not too late to get the latest flu vaccine or a COVID booster.
“They seem to be effective and certainly can prevent serious illness,” he said.
“We would prefer for people to take it up as early as possible but it’s still not too late and we would encourage anyone eligible to come along.
“If enough people get infected, even if it’s not as serious as earlier variants, somebody somewhere who is vulnerable will get sick.”
The CCO said an RSV vaccine could also be on the way soon.
“There is one in the making and it’s going through a health technology assessment,” said Dr Henry.
“Depending on the outcome of that - which is looking at the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the vaccine - if there’s a positive outcome, there is every chance we could have it later this year.
“The RSV vaccine may have a different target population [than others], given that those who are most vulnerable of becoming sick are below five years of age.”
Emergencies only
Dr Colm Henry said it's important to remind people that Emergency Departments (ED) are for “emergency care only” and those with injuries can go to designated units.
“We have 13 local injury units across the country and they are well placed to treat people,” he said.
“They’re open from 8am to 8pm seven days a week and can deal with fractures from the knees down to the ankles and from shoulders down to the fingers.
“They don’t deal with serious brain injuries, abdominal pain, or chest pain, but they deal with wounds and all other sorts of minor injuries like that.”

,1,Some cancer patients receiving chemotherapy are 'stressed' that their car could be clamped by the time they leave the hospital.
Irish Cancer Society CEO Averil Power said many patients simply can't cope with the added cost of parking charges, which can be as much as €300 per month.
It comes after it emerged measures to introduce a cap on charges for patients has been delayed.
The Journal reports the HSE is redoing work on the issue it completed five years ago.
Ms Power told The Hard Shoulder they have been waiting over a decade for the changes.
"This is really very frustrating, it's an issue that's constantly raised with us both by patients and by their families," she said.
"When you have cancer obviously the physical and emotional toll is immense, but the financial toll is also huge.
"If someone is sick themselves they're off work, but a loved one often has to take time off to look after them as well.
"Being down on income and then having to pay these charges of, in some cases, up to €300 per month in parking fees, is having a huge toll on people.
"They just can't cope, especially with all the other costs at the minute.
"It's so frustrating that 10 years on we're still talking about this".

,1,The average salary earner can expect a €780 increase in take-home pay as a €1.3 billion tax package comes into effect from tomorrow.
The package was announced as part of Budget 2024 and includes a series of tax cuts and increases in credits.
A single person earning an average annual salary of €47,000 can expect to see an increase in take-home pay of €780 in 2024.
A couple earning €100,000 between them will see an increase in take-home pay of €1,560 in 2024.
Minister for Finance Michael McGrath said the tax package will ensure over two million people see an increase in their take-home pay.
“A key theme of Budget 2024 was to enhance a number of tax incentives for enterprise in Ireland,” he said.
From tomorrow, the main tax credits (personal, employee and earned income) will all increase by €100 from €1,775 to €1,875.
There are also increases to the Home Carer Tax Credit, Single Person Child Carer Tax Credit and Incapacitated Child Tax Credit.
The Rent Tax Credit was also increased to €750 for single people, up from €500.
The first USC rate cut in 5 years will see the 4.5% rate reduced to 4%.
The second USC rate band (2%) was also increased to €25,760 to account for the increase in minimum wage and to ensure full-time workers earning the national minimum wage will remain outside the top rates of USC.
Mr McGrath said the tax package is combined with targeted mortgage interest relief, an extension of the reduction in VAT on electricity and gas, additional energy credits and social protection changes.
“This represents a comprehensive response on the part of Government to the cost-of-living challenges faced by households,” he said.
The Research and Development tax credit will also increase to 30% for 2024 expenditure, which Mr McGrath said will help businesses “invest in their future productivity”.
An increase in the cap on qualifying expenditure from €75 million to €125 million for the Film Tax Credit is subject to State Aid approval.

,1,Senator Lynn Ruane questions Justice Minister Helen McEntee over whether we need a discussion on the catalyst for some people becoming involved in the Dublin riots.
Helen McEntee is appearing before the Oireachtas Justice Committee this morning to answer questions on the State response to the riots.
Garda cars, buses and a tram were set alight during the riots last months – with shops looted and vandalised.
The violence came after protesters gathered near the scene of the Parnell Square attack became violent.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee has been heavily criticised for her response to the riots – with the Government beating off a Sinn Féin vote of no confidence in her earlier this week.
Meanwhile, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris was grilled over the Garda response to the violence in his own appearance before the committee last week.

,1,The mother of a young girl injured in the Parnell Square school stabbings two weeks ago has thanked people for their support.
The five-year-old girl was left critically ill after the incident outside Gaelscoil Coláiste Mhuire in Dublin city on November 23rd.
Two other children, aged five and six, were also injured in the attack but were discharged from hospital afterwards.
A carer, who was stabbed as she tried to shield the children, was also hospitalised.
In a statement posted on a GoFundMe page, the mother of the young girl still in hospital thanked everyone for their generosity over the past fortnight.
"Dear all, thank you so much for the incredible gesture and kindness you have shown our family during these troubled times," she said.
"Your thoughts, prayers and generosity have and will go a long way.
"Our little girl has shown incredible strength and [is] still here with us.
"We don't know yet what lies ahead as it is still early, but she is resilient and limitations will not stop her. Thank you so much. All the love we can give," she added.
Many children from junior and senior infants witnessed the stabbings while others had to shelter in the school as emergency services helped the injured.
Riots in the aftermath the attack brought violence and looting to the capital which saw buses, cars and a tram set on fire.

,1,Rory Hearne (Associate Professor of Social Policy Maynooth University and author of ‘Gaffs’) joins Ciara Kelly on Newstalk Breakfast to discuss a new RTB report that notes the highest annual rent hike since 2007.
More substantial rent increases have been recorded by the Residential Tenancies Board in the second quarter of the year.
Rent levels in both new and existing tenancies have increased nationally.
The standardised average rent in new tenancies grew by 11.6% year-on-year and in existing tenancies it increased by by 5.3%.
The standardised average rent in the second quarter of the year was €1,332 for existing tenancies and €1,574 for new tenancies - a difference of €242 per month.
The RTB said the annualised rental inflation for new tenancies now stands at the highest level since the series began.
However, rents for existing tenancies grew by less than half the rate for new tenancies on an annual basis and by less than the Consumer Price Index (CPI) over the same period.
RTB Director Niall Byrne said the report includes information on existing tenancies for the first-time.
"The production of an index that can track rent developments in all rents across the private rental sector is a major step forward," he said.
"Information is now available for sitting tenants which was not available in the previous Rent Index Reports.
"Over time, these indices will provide strong evidence and deeper insights into the private rental sector for the benefit of policymakers and the public."
The Rent Index does not measure compliance with Rent Pressure Zone legislation.
The RTB said the 5.3% annual increase in rents in existing tenancies is "not to be interpreted as a measure of compliance with RPZ rules".
"It is a national figure that is based on existing tenancies, both inside and outside RPZs," it said.
New RPZ designations are also coming into effect for Shannon Local Electoral Area and the Administrative Area of Westmeath County Council.
Based on the Rent Pressure Zone criteria, they have been designated as RPZs as of today, November 30th.
Rent increases in an RPZ are currently limited to 2% per year under the law.
