We live in the Age of the Bully. No longer memories confined to our childhood schoolyards, they are all around us. Bullying is not a phenomenon that plagues children or humans alone, but is a fact of all social life across species, ages, and cultures. At its core, it is an exercise in power—a method to elevate one’s rank by diminishing further that of other, much less powerful, individuals. Bullies display force and dare others not to flinch. They become the arbiters of inclusion and exclusion, setting and solidifying social and political norms to the detriment of those that do not conform to their vision or interests. They can be CEOs, presidents, mean girls, or hedge fund managers. Though the trope of standing up to a bully makes for a compelling narrative, substantive change requires dismantling the systems that got them there in the first place. This is no simple task. Today we face bullies that have come to occupy, control, and often even subvert the institutions that traditionally existed to protect us. Here are some more of the questions that we will ask: How do you spot a bully? How do you stand up to them? Why does our social system reward this kind of behavior? Do bully-proof societies or places exist? Are there bully stereotypes? Are the bullies that evade those stereotypes more dangerous? Does gender play a role? Are female bullies less common, or do we notice them less? Does the detection of bullying behavior change across cultures? Is there bullying in the animal world? Is bullying an active choice or an inescapable psychological trait? Can you hide it? Is there such a thing as a good bully? Can there be an upside? How has our understanding of and opinion toward bullying changed over time? Ruth Ben-Ghiat: is Professor of History and Italian Studies at NYU and writes on fascism, authoritarianism, propaganda, and democracy protection. Simon DeDeo: is Associate Professor of Social and Decision Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, and director of the Laboratory for Social Minds. Steven Donziger: is an environmental lawyer known for his legal battles with Chevron, representing the local communities of the Ecuadorian Amazon in Aguinda v. Texaco, Inc. Alex Gibney: is an Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker of such films as Taxi to the Dark Side, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, and The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, among others. Damian Norfleet: is an interdisciplinary performer-composer-improviser whose work explores the human condition and inter-communal relationships. Betsy Levy Paluck: is Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs at Princeton University and focuses on prejudice, intergroup conflict reduction, the application of social psychological theory as a tool for societal change. In response to the growing backlash, Bob Geldof, one of the founders of Band Aid, told the Conversation: “This little pop song has kept hundreds of thousands if not millions of people alive. By 2015, he was ready to go public with a new rocket named the New Shepherd, the first reusable rocket to reach space. A year later, Musk announced an ambitious, widely ridiculed, plan to colonise Mars within 30 years. In the meantime, Bezos was working on plans to colonise the moon. When competition with China made returning to the moon a top priority for President Trump, there was one big question: which company would get the lucrative NASA moon contract? Aside from colonising space and NASA contracts, the two billionaires are also racing to launch the most satellites. This allows them to deliver low latency broadband data services everywhere on the Earth… and to monopolise all future terrestrial communications. Posted • November 24, 2024: In the grand scheme of things, "Surgeon General" is a wasteful and often counterproductive (assuming the goal is actually improving public health and not advancing special interests) position that Trump should do away with entirely. No one needs a sleazy bureaucrat in a silly admiral costume using their tax money to tell them how to live their lives — much less issuing pseudoscientific edicts for unclear and nefarious purposes, as we have been subject to for many years now. What we need, in my opinion and apparently many other Americans’ given the recent election results, is a bulldog like RFK Jr., doctor or not, to clean up the water, air, drug, and food supplies through — and I know this is anathema to conservative orthodoxy, but I believe it’s necessary in the real world with bad industry actors who don’t care about human health and often, indeed, seem hellbent on ruining it — regulations that make sense and that are applied honestly and aggressively.

But anyway, if this government bloat is to continue in perpetuity, the Surgeon General ought rightly to be someone exactly not like Janette Nesheiwat, Trump’s nominee. Nesheiwat, who specialized in emergency and family medicine, has supported vaccines that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s nominee for HHS secretary, has cast doubts about. Janette has not just “supported vaccines”; she has actively promoted and praised censorship of dissident voices on the topic in the alleged service of Public Health™. She also fearmongered in 2021 on nominally conservative Fox News with no pushback from the “journalist” interviewing her about COVID “putting our children in the hospital in record numbers” and, as a result, hospitals were “running out of ICU beds.” Both claims were lies. Here's Nesheiwat on Fox Business praising Facebook's approach to censoring anti-vaccine "disinformation" and hoping that other social media platforms would follow suit. Trump's pick for Surgeon General, Janette Nesheiwat, praised Facebook for censoring anti-vaccine information, adding that she will "hope and pray" other social media companies do the same. -- Nesheiwat was also a BIG fan of masking and social distancing. Janette Nesheiwat endorsed masks for children, promoted COVID vaccination for all age groups, and approved of censorship by social media companies.

Look, there's a lot we didn't know about COVID. But we know it now, so why regress? This is like when former Planned Parenthood President Dr. Leana Wen told CNN in December of 2021 that "cloth masks a little more than facial decoration" and don't work — after we'd all been forced to wear cloth masks. Or when President Joe Biden promised you wouldn't contract or spread COVID if you got the vaccine. Then Biden got COVID at least twice despite double-masking and getting every booster available. But no, we don't want anyone who praised social media for censoring discussion of the vaccine and its effectiveness. Let's hope she has revised her stance on these things in light of all the new information that has come out since the time of this interview.
