The pen. The clink. The slammer. The joint. The cooler. The nick. The big house. The hoosegow. Whatever you call it, it is the place most of us dread ending up: prison. A central pillar of our modern justice system, prisons loom large in the popular imagination, inspiring whole genres of literature, music, and film; and even entire schools of philosophical thought. They are entire insular worlds unto themselves, potent symbols for the nature of freedom, justice, and humanity itself. But more than just institutions or buildings, prisons are also a form of technology, whose function is to contain, control, and - hopefully - reform and rehabilitate large numbers of people as efficiently as possible. As a result, over the past two centuries prison design has seen plenty of innovation, ranging from the practical to the ingenious to the downright bizarre. And few prison designs were stranger than an 1880s contraption that enclosed its prisoners in what can only be described as a giant rotating squirrel cage. While several of these innovative structures were constructed across the midwestern United States, they proved impractical and reliable, and became but a minor yet fascinating footnote in the history of criminal justice. This is the strange tale of the rotary jail.

,1,In an attempt to challenge the competency of his opponent, Trump questioned Biden’s golf abilities when asked about concerns over his own capability to serve.
“He can’t hit a ball 50 yards,” Trump claimed, after saying he himself aced two cognitive tests.
“You can see he is six-foot-five and only 225 pounds,” Biden responded facetiously. “Just look at what he says he is, and take a look at what he is.”
Biden also said he would be happy to compete against Trump, so long as they carried their own golf bags. “I got my handicap,” Biden said, referring to his average best score (above par), “when I was Vice President, down to a six.”
“That’s the biggest lie—that he’s a six handicap—of all,” Trump said. “I’ve seen you swing.”
Trump, who was criticized during his presidency for the amount of time he spent at his golf courses, took to Truth Social to share a short clip of him playing the sport.

Currently, only China, Russia, and the United States have this technology.
The Indian missile, developed by the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and industry partners, is designed to carry payloads for ranges exceeding 1,500 km (930 miles) for the armed forces, the government said in a statement.
It is being termed a Long Range Anti Ship Hypersonic Missile (LRAShM) given the absence of any other known nomenclature for the missile family.
The government added, "The flight data ... confirmed the successful terminal maneuvers and impact with high degree of accuracy”.
The test-firing took place from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam island off the eastern coast of Odisha state
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called the test a "historic achievement" in a post on X and congratulated “DRDO, armed forces, and industry for stupendous achievement”.

,1,NEW witnesses are set to be quizzed over the disappearance of Jay Slater after the alleged theft of a Rolex hours before the teen vanished.
Two mystery Brits who partied with Jay Slater on the night of his disappearance are "not relevant", investigators have also said today.
The latest twist comes just days after a private investigator called the men "key witnesses" in the case.
A "massive" new search kicked off today with the help of specialist volunteers amid a "make or break" final push to find the 19-year-old Brit.
It comes amid a key 48 hours in the search for Jay - which has now been labelled as "make or break".
The source added: "There’s a feeling that this weekend is going to be absolutely key. A huge amount of resources and effort is being piled into the next 48 hours.
“It’s not all or nothing, but investigators dearly hope this weekend will provide the breakthrough they are hoping for.”
