“Listen, my children, and you shall hear, Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere, On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five: Hardly a man is now alive, Who remembers that famous day and year.”
These are the words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his famous 1860 poem Paul Revere’s Ride, which is where most of popular history’s perception of this famous event and its purpose came from. But it turns out, a huge percentage of the poem is wildly inaccurate, from Revere seeming to ride alone in the poem, to the lanterns at the church being meant to tell Revere what message to send, rather than it being Revere himself who instructed how many lanterns to hang in case he should fail to get across the river and make his famous ride. Most significantly of all in the inaccuracies, however, is where Revere was initially going and why. It turns out, the primary concern before anything else was to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams, who were lodging in Lexington at the time, that the British soldiers were seemingly coming for them.
As we’ve previously covered in our videos Hancock: Rise of the Merchant Prince, and Hancock: Igniting the Revolution, the oft forgotten Founding Father John Hancock was a lot more prominent in the early going of the American Revolution than just his John Hancock on the Declaration of Independence, as is mostly all that’s remembered of him today. But at this point in the story, the British had seemingly decided enough was enough. And it was time to do something about the so-called “King Hancock” and his partner in crime Samuel Adams- a man who was the walking talking epitome of the over 2000 year old general concept of the pen being mightier than the sword.
Here now is the real story of Paul Revere's ride and the aftermath in part 3 of our series on the oft' forgotten John Hancock.

While modern humans have existed for at least a few hundred thousands years, we didn’t really start massively progressing from our earliest ancestors until we began forming large and very complex societies after transitioning away from small hunter-gather groups for various reasons. Critical to all this being able to happen was creating sets of rules which members of each society agreed to live by. As John Wick’s Winston Scott so sagely stated, “Rules. Without them, we live with the animals.” While what specific laws these earliest agricultural societies functioned under has been largely lost to history outside of things we can infer from archaeological evidence, over the ensuing 10,000 years or so, humans have had a lot of ideas on what the best ways for societies to function are, and what sets of fundamental principles and laws to implement to get there. Perhaps not coincidentally, our biggest leaps in recent centuries came on the back of a major shift in such societal rules and government structure in many prominent nations- not only away from a system of hereditary elite who everyone and the system is meant to serve on some level, but also to systems where those who would abuse such power when given it are kept in check as much as possible and, in theory, those placed in power also are meant to serve the system and those very people who put them there, not wholly the other way around.
Of course any system is rife for abuse, and, for example, the Soviet Union had just such a system setup which included in their latter two constitutions giving its citizens the rights of freedom of speech, the press, religion, and the right to assemble peacefully. In reality, however, if citizens used these constitutionally guaranteed freedoms in a way the authorities didn’t like, being imprisoned or even executed for it was a thing. Thus, even in clearly defined systems, if safeguards aren’t put in place to ensure these principles are enforced regardless of who is holding the positions of power, then the paper they are written on would perhaps more usefully be used to wipe one’s backside after doing their necessaries.
Further, mobs are relatively easily swayed by exploiting facets of human psychology built into all of us. At all levels, while many may strive to be the ideal human and version of ourselves, we are all still human- subject to the same weaknesses, biases, and prejudices as those who came before us for tens of thousands of years. And even the most intelligent of us can be manipulated in various ways relatively easily, whether we like to admit it to ourselves or not. Thus, how an ideal society and government may function in theory, and one that can actually function well in the real world, are two VERY different things. Let alone forming a structure of government and laws that stands the test of time and provides some level of stability across many generations, with, unsurprisingly, the vast majority of constitutions going the way of the dodo within a decade or two of their establishment.
Unsurprisingly from all this, forming effective and stable governments is extremely difficult, and I don’t think anyone would argue any government that exists today has yet reached the ultimate ideal for all. As the “Father of the U.S. Constitution”, James Madison, would sum up, “no Government of human device, & human administration can be perfect; [thus] that which is the least imperfect is therefore the best Govt.”
But in the last several hundred years we humans have come a long way in this regard, and, perhaps not coincidentally, much like our progress starting 10,000 years ago or so through to relatively modern times made our progress the previous few hundred thousand years seem glacial, in the last few hundred years, humanity has advanced to a level in that timespan that makes our progress the previous 10,000 years seem at a snail’s pace. While countless things went into that, at its core many of these factors derive and were the indirect product of these more modern structures for civilization that allow extra freedoms, education, and relative stability for its populaces’ to prosper on an individual level.
This all brings us to the topic of today, the oldest still functioning codified constitution.

So when I was 18 years old, when I was old enough to fight and die for my country, old enough to drink, old enough to vote, I said I was old enough to be called a man. I self-ordained myself Mr. T so the first word out of everybody’s mouth is Mr."

,1,The crew of Apollo 13 is remembered for the dramatic events that took place during their mission, but they also set an amazing, yet little talked about record that still stands to date. They traveled farther from Earth than any other humans in history when they were approximately 248,655 miles from Earth at 1:12 a.m. on April 15, 1970. At the time, they were also about 158 miles above the lunar surface on the far side of the Moon.

As she stated in a Q&A with the New York Times, “Here’s the thing. When you’re performing on stage, you never really have time to go into the bathroom and close the door. So if you get a little gassy, you’ve got to let it go. So people used to say to me, ‘You are like a whoopee cushion.’ And that’s where the name came from. ” The second part of her stage name, Goldberg, was suggested by her mother as she felt using a Jewish last name would help Whoopi in Hollywood.

You should've saw his face when he saw me." Funny enough, years later for Brad Pitt’s 50th birthday, Angelina Jolie got Pitt an autographed poster of Mike Tyson. On it, Tyson reportedly wrote, “Yo Brad! Still love your taste in women. Happy 50th Dude. Best Wishes, Mike.”

,1,In the opening days of the Second World War at sea, the U-boats of the German Kriegsmarine reigned supreme. Attacking in deadly, coordinated wolf packs, these stealthy vessels cut swath through Allied shipping convoys in the north Atlantic, threatening to sever Britain’s vital lifeline to North America and starve the island nation into submission. But this “happy time” -as U-boat crews called it -was not to last, for by 1943 major developments in Allied naval technology and tactics -from radar and sonar to escort carriers and long-range patrol aircraft -had succeeded in turning the tide, putting the once-feared U-boat arm firmly on the back foot. Meanwhile, the German surface fleet -never large to begin with -remained largely bottled up in port, its commanders hesitant to commit their expensive capital ships to battle. With the Allies pushing into mainland Europe -first in Italy, then in France -theGerman Navy began to look increasingly irrelevant. In response to this changing strategic situation, the Kriegsmarinedecided to switch gears and think small, deploying a variety of bizarre miniature attack craft from human torpedoes and midget submarinesto frogmen and explosive, remote-control motorboats. While certainly creative, the combat performance of these weapons of desperation was less than impressive, and ultimately had little impact on the course of the war. This is the story of Nazi Germany’s hilariously awful Naval Special Forces.

History often remembers the great men of each era, their very public accomplishments, and the trials and tribulations they may or may not have gone through to get there, sometimes to the extreme. What’s often forgotten in many cases is the men generally didn’t do any of it alone. For most, there was their partner in life beside them supporting them through it all. Beyond such aphorisms as “Behind every great man, you’ll find a great woman”, as Ben Franklin noted in his June 25, 1745 “Old Mistresses Apologue”, “It is the Man and Woman united that make the complete human Being. Separate, she wants his Force of Body and Strength of Reason; he, her Softness, Sensibility and acute Discernment. Together they are more likely to succeed in the World. A single Man has not nearly the Value he would have in that State of Union. He is an incomplete Animal. He resembles the odd Half of a Pair of Scissors. If you get a prudent healthy Wife, your Industry in your Profession, with her good Economy, will be a Fortune sufficient.”
Nowhere is this perhaps better illustrated than in the United States’ first power couple, John and Abigail Adams. Breaking many customs of their era, Abigail was subservient to no one, an equal partner in their combined journey to help create and shape the United States, with arguably only a handful of others having more influence on the United States today because of their work in its foundation than these two. While Thomas Jefferson would once state of John Adams during Adams’ Presidency, Adams “takes no counsel from anyone”, he was incorrect. His closest confidant and whom he thoroughly relied for her equally keen intellect next to her certifiably genius husband, was his wife, Abigail. As historian and author of Abigail and John: Portrait of a Marriage Edith Gelles, notes, "Abigail was his best ally, and because she was intelligent, well-informed and totally sympathetic with him, she was devoted to his politics. She probably was the best-informed and most reliable advisor to a president until Eleanor Roosevelt in the 20th century."
On top of this, while her husband was off gallivanting across the nation and the world, leaving them parted for about half of the first two decades of their marriage, she also managed all the family’s affairs from approximately middle class to start, to later great prosperity in some rather ingenious ways that actually occasionally went against her husband’s wishes, as we’ll get into, but in the end doing it anyway and making John Adams one of the few early presidents who not only didn’t see near financial ruin because of the nature of the position at the time, but one who died relatively wealthy. This was in stark contrast to the likes of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison who started off incredibly wealthy and ended life deeply in debt- in Adams’ case, all achieved through Abigail’s keen mind for investments, allowing her husband to do his thing without concern for his financial base and homefront.
Going back to her counsel, it is thus no coincidence that when John Adams finally ascended to the role of President, he desperately wrote to his then sick wife four hundred miles away in Quincy, “I never wanted your Advice and assistance more in my life…” And, “I can do nothing without you… Public affairs are so critical and dangerous that all our Thoughts must be taken up with them. I must intreat you, to loose not a moments time in preparing to come… assist me with your Councils…”
The first woman to be both wife and later mother to a U.S. President, and generally ranked as one of the best female intellect’s of her era in the United States, so much so that she was given the nickname “Mrs. President” for her influence on affairs of state during her husband’s Presidency, Abigail Adams is the oft’ forgotten half of the power couple pair, and considered by many to be greatest among the little talked about “Founding Mothers”, and a woman future President Harry Truman would remark, “would have been a better President than her husband.”
So let’s dive into it shall we?

,1,As the Allied armies advanced through France, Italy and Eastern Europe, high ranking officials and officers in the German National Socialist Party, the SS and the Wehrmacht seem to have finally realised that taking on most of the largest industrialised countries in the World all at the same time had not been the wisest idea, and at this point there was a slight chance that their supposedly Aryan behinds could get a little spanking for being such naughty little nazis. And while by virtue of being human, no doubt a percentage of them might have enjoyed the odd flogging session, let’s just say not all of them were keen to assume the position and answer for their crimes. Especially if the position in question included getting choked out by a rope… Ok, listen, maybe this isn’t the best analogy. The point is, while for some people that’s all just a fun Saturday night, for these individuals, their crimes were such that they’d not get to continue breathing afterwards, which is key so as to be able to wonder what’s wrong with you as you look in the mirror the next morning.
Silliness aside, even the most rabid extremist was fully aware that their Axis enemies knew of their rather extreme crimes against humanity, see our video What Did the German Public Know About the Holocaust During WWII? As such, as the war was winding down and with the writing on the wall, many of the leaders among the Nazis - especially within the SS - started to draft plans for their escape to neutral and friendly nations in order to secure their livelihoods and lives after the war.
One of the top destinations recommended by ‘Nazi Holiday Deals, Inc.’ was Argentina. But this all brings up the question of, of all the places in the world they could potentially go, “Why Argentina?”

If you’ve spent any time on the interwebs there are three almost universal facts you’re going to come across. Nikola Tesla was a God among mortals, Thomas Edison was a patent thief charlatan who we only remember today because of how he stole other people’s ideas, including Tesla’s. And, third, X is a horrible renaming of Twitter and Elon Musk should seriously rethink his decision making paradigm. And yet, up until relatively recently, Nikola Tesla was something of a footnote in popular history, Thomas Edison was considered one of the most prolific inventors ever, the 19th century’s answer to DaVinci, and X was an objectively useless letter of the alphabet. Seriously. It doesn’t need to exist. And neither does Q or C.
But going back to Thomas Edison, as historian Keith Nier once very aptly noted, "He is actually one of the least well known of all famous people, and much of what everybody thinks they know about him is no more reliable than a fairy tale."
And let me tell you, there is a reason this video is so long as Mr. Nier absolutely nailed it. Also because his life was an insanely interesting story.
So, today we are going to cut through all the misinformation and do an ultra deep dive into the real story of Thomas Edison- whether he was really one of history’s ultimate creatives, or just someone who was really, really good at taking credit for other people’s work.
In all this we are also going look at the various stories surrounding Nicholas Tesla and Edison, which, on this one. Just to cut to the chase, basically everything you’ve probably ever read about the supposed feud between those two is quite provably false. There was no feud. And not only did Edison not take any patents from Tesla, he actually allowed Tesla to patent things he came up with when working on projects at his job for Edison, even though this wasn’t typical, then or now, and it’s not really clear why Edison did this in Tesla’s case. But because Edison allowed this, via the sale of some of these, it allowed Tesla to crack on on his own. So much more on all this later! Because as much as there is an insane amount of misinformation about Edison, there’s just as much misinformation out there on Tesla. Stay tuned because we are going to clear that right up.
So let’s clear it all up, shall we?

,1,The Haskell Free Library and Opera House has a curious line painted through the building. What does this line signify? One side of the line lies in Quebec, Canada, while the other is in the state of Vermont in the United States. Because of this, the building has two main entrances on either side of the border. The building also has two different addresses and telephone area codes. Further, because of the layout of the building, it's jokingly referred to as "the only library in the U.S. with no books and the only opera house in the U.S. with no stage" (the library and the stage are on the Canadian side, while most of the audience of the opera sits in the U.S.). If you're wondering, people inside can freely cross the line marking the border, but if they then exit the building, they are required to report to Customs, but otherwise are free to traverse one side of the building or the other without such notification. Intentionally built on the border in the early 20th century, the building was placed such as Mrs. Martha Stewart Haskell and Col. Horace "Stewart" Haskell wanted both Canadians and U.S. citizens to have access to the library and opera house.

,1,The creator of the Nike "Swoosh" logo, Carolyn Davidson, was only paid $35 for the design. Davidson was a graphics design student at Portland State University when she randomly encountered Phil Knight, who was an assistant professor of accounting there at the time. Knight overheard Davidson talking to a friend stating that she was short on funds, so approached her and offered to pay her $2 an hour (about $14 an hour today) to do some graphics work for his business, Blue Ribbon Sports, which would evolve into Nike. A few years later, he hired her to make a logo similar to the Adidas logo and that conveyed "motion." 17.5 hours of work later (over the course of about three weeks), one of her many doodles she presented to Knight was the accented check-mark that is the Nike "swoosh". Knight ultimately chose that one, speaking the words every designer dreams of hearing from a client, "I don’t love it, but I think it will grow on me."

,1,In August of 2012, the National Art Museum of Ukraine held an “artistic” event where they had five beautiful women lay as if they were asleep. Men then signed up to kiss them. The women who signed up had to sign an agreement that if they opened their eyes while being kissed, they’d have to marry the man kissing them. Similarly, the men who did the kissing also had to sign such an agreement. None of the women opened their eyes, though one, 27 year old Natalya Bakovskaya, stated that she nearly did so for one of the kissers as his kiss was incredible. Afterwards, she stated she regretted not having had the courage to open her peepers… Probably for the best...

,1,The late Michael Jackson once approached J.K. Rowling about the possibility of doing a musical version of Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling said no to the idea. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she said that she felt that it wouldn’t be successful. She told Oprah, “Michael Jackson wanted to do a musical. I said no to a lot of things. For me, I love the films; I love the books; and there’s elements that I love around it, like the theme park. But I only wanted to do it because I knew it would be incredible.”

,1,The word ‘desert’, as in “to get what is coming to you”, has been used in English since around the 13th century. However, this word has fallen out of common usage and now, outside of the idiom “just desert”, is almost never used, leading to many people mistakenly thinking it’s “just desserts” instead of the correct “just deserts”.

Ah YouTube, a place where any beautifully bearded British bald man with a microphone and nerdy, socially awkward American, who despite being 42 from the sounds of it is still waiting on puberty to hit, can go to team up across oceans and make the world’s greatest edutainment channel according to the words that just came out of my mouth. In fact, just about anyone these days with a cell phone and a dream can make it big coming to this platform and, with very little technical know-how, launch whatever channel they want and put it in front of one of the largest audiences in the world, no longer beholden to the gatekeepers of yor. And, hey, if you don’t yet have the knowledge or skills needed to implement your vision, we’re quite confident that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of youtube videos out there that will teach you exactly what you need to know, for free. All that is required of you is time, effort, and a fair amount of determination to keep going and improving. On that note, fun fact about this channel, it took 532 videos until the channel took off. But while today YouTube is arguably one of the most well known brands and websites in the world, with about 2 billion active users in any given month, and has been one of the biggest revolutions in entertainment since Napster, Youtube isn’t even old enough to drink in the United States, at just 18 years old. Not only that, it turns out when YouTube was first started, it was not meant to be a general video sharing platform but, rather, a dating and hookup website. So how did they go from a site to seek a spicy time partner to one where even this guy can somehow be watched by millions? And just what was the first ever YouTube video? (Which by the way doesn’t appear to be what literally everyone says. More on that in the Bonus Facts later.) But for now, have a seat on your porcelain throne or prepare your meal and sit down to eat, which we’re pretty sure comprises 90% of all views on YouTube outside of people using these videos to distract their brains from thoughts of the inevitability of death while trying to fall asleep... And, either way, let’s dive into it shall we?

,1,While Amanda McBroom is probably best known for her role as Judge Advocate General Captain Philippa Louvois in what is generally considered one of the best Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes, The Measure of a Man, it might also surprise you to learn that she wrote the song, The Rose, first made famous by Bette Midler in the film of the same name. According to McBroom, she wrote the song in under an hour in 1977, attempting to make something "Bob-Seger-like" in hopes of getting a record deal. She performed the song over the next couple years with little fanfare before it was tabbed to be used in the 1979 Midler film.

“Helicopter’s don’t fly -they just beat the air into submission.” and “Helicopters aren’t aircraft -they’re just ten thousand parts flying in close formation.” are just two of the many tongue-in-cheek sayingswhich have been levelled at rotorcraft. Yet despite their often ungainly and precarious appearance, it cannot be denied that helicopters are remarkable pieces of engineering, capable of taking off and landing almost anywhere, hovering perfectly still in midair, and maneuvering in any direction with incredible precision. These unique abilities have made helicopters indispensable in dozens of fields, from search and rescue to construction, tourism, policing, journalism, and warfare. Unsurprisingly, this degree of sophistication and adaptability took considerable time and effort to achieve, with nearly four decades separating the first aeroplane flight and the first practical helicopter. But who was responsible for this technological breakthrough? Who were the Wright Brothers of the helicopter? While one man is usually credited with making the helicopter a practical vehicle, like most important technologies, rotorcraft are the product of dozens of different inventors making incremental developments over many decades. This is the story of how mankind achieved the dream of vertical flight.

,1,It was considered the height of fashion for women to shave off their eyebrows, and even eye lashes, in Florence during the Renaissance. As noted by Francisco Delicado in 1528 when discussing a certain brothel's workers, "You’ll see more than ten whores, some who pluck their eyebrows and others who shave their private parts." It was long thought that this is why "Mona Lisa" had no eyebrows or eyelashes. However, in 2007, Parisian engineer Pascal Cotte, who took 240 megapixel scans of the painting, claims that his scans revealed that originally there were both eyebrows and eyelashes, but they disappeared over time as a result of restoration work.

One of the lasting legacies of Rome in modern society is the concept of a Senate, though it wasn’t really what we think of as a Senate today. In many countries today, you can find a similar governing body of elected or appointed representatives. If you dive a little deeper, you can see different countries have very different ideas of what a senate is. Usually in a bicameral legislature, that is when a country has more than one legislative body, the Senate acts as the higher assembly. This role can be official and the members are elected, such as the American Senate. In other countries it is symbolic and made up of appointees, such as the Canadian Senate - not to be confused with the Ottawa Senators, who are a bad hockey team. However, the Roman Senate was very different from either the American, Canadian, or quite possibly any modern legislative body calling itself a Senate.
