The U.S. Air Force is bringing the island airfield that launched the atomic bombings of Japan back into service as it seeks bases where its Pacific forces can disperse in wartime.
Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, commander of Pacific Air Forces, told Nikkei Asia for a Dec. 13 report that North Airfield on the island of Tinian is being reclaimed from the jungle that has overgrown it since World War II.
In 1945, the airfield included four 8,500-foot runways that launched B-29 Superfortress bombers against Japan.
Visitors to Tinian can still witness pits where the atom bombs — Fat Man and Little Boy meant for Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were loaded onto B-29s.
Tinian has been part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, which is a US territory in the Pacific and has a population of 3,000 people. It is about 118 miles or 190 km from Guam.

It is being termed a Long Range Anti Ship Hypersonic Missile (LRAShM) given the absence of any other known nomenclature for the missile family.
The government added, "The flight data ... confirmed the successful terminal maneuvers and impact with high degree of accuracy”.
The test-firing took place from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam island off the eastern coast of Odisha state
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called the test a "historic achievement" in a post on X and congratulated “DRDO, armed forces, and industry for stupendous achievement”.

A US official confirmed, “The United States was pre-notified briefly before the launch”. It was done since it could have been mistaken for a nuclear strike.

According to the Missile Defense Agency., the Defense Department’s advanced missile tracking satellites logged their first views of a hypersonic flight test.
Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) satellites were able to track a hypersonic system.
MDA didn’t disclose the date of the flight, which took off from Wallops Island in Virginia.
The agency said in a June 14 statement, “Initial reports show the sensors successfully collected data after launch. MDA will continue to assess flight data over the next several weeks.”
Viewers may note, that the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and Space Development Agency (SDA) are actively working on components of a hypersonic missile defense system to protect against hypersonic weapons and other emerging missile threats. This includes developing the tracking and transport layers of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) and various interceptor programs.
