,1,South African Justice Minister Ronald Lamola outlined his country's case at the United Nations’ top court Thursday accusing Israel of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.
South African lawyers said during the opening arguments that the latest Gaza war is part of a decadeslong oppression of the Palestinians by Israel. Israel has vehemently denied the allegations. South African lawyers asked judges to impose binding preliminary orders on Israel, including an immediate halt to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Minister Lamola said the Oct. 7 Hamas attack from Gaza into southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people and saw some 250 others taken hostage by militants is "no justification for any form of genocide."
"We believe that without the intervention of this court from the international community, we will see the total destruction of the Palestinian people in Gaza," he added.
Israel’s air, ground and sea assault in Gaza has killed more than 23,000 people, two-thirds of them women and children, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory. The count does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

Yet, just as Trump fractured political norms, his presidency has splintered white evangelical families with a reactionary movement of people leaving the church: EXvangelicals.
Drawing on her own personal religious journey, NPR reporter Sarah McCammon is a guide to understanding the immense support for Trump among white evangelical Christians, the backlash among former believers, and what this tells us about a divided America and the culture wars.
After spending her early adult life striving to make sense of an unraveling worldview, by her 30s, she found herself face-to-face with it once again as she covered the Trump campaign for NPR, where she witnessed first-hand the power and influence that evangelical Christian beliefs held on the political right. Growing up in a deeply evangelical family in the Midwest in the ‘80s and ‘90s, McCammon was strictly taught to fear God, obey him, and not question the faith. Persistently worried that her gay grandfather would go to hell unless she could reach him, or that her Muslim friend would need to be converted, McCammon was a rule-follower and—most of the time—a true believer. But through it all, she was increasingly plagued by fears and deep questions as the belief system she'd been carefully taught clashed with her expanding understanding of the outside world.
Part memoir, part investigative journalism, McCammon’s The Exvangelicals is the first definitive book to explore the cultural, social and political impact of the post-evangelical movement.

PAPER SUMMARY
Postsecondary institutions affect the economy of the area around them, but the question is how. In the early 2000s, the United States experienced a rapid increase in both the number of students attending college and the number of branch campuses serving these students. We examine branch campus openings that took place in two states, Tennessee and Texas, that are representative of the underlying patterns in the nation as a whole. We provide estimates of the impacts of these branches campuses on local economic conditions. Because the impacts of these branch campuses could be more localized than county- or state-level data might reveal, we use satellite images to construct otherwise unavailable measures of economic development around these small branch-campus regions. We find a clear positive association. In Tennessee, this effect seems to be driven largely by two-year campuses, while the effect is higher for four-year campuses in Texas. As the location of new branch campuses is likely endogenous to local economic conditions, simple estimates may not reflect a causal effect. For Texas, we are able to use an instrumental variable to estimate causal effects. Our instrument takes advantage of local taxing regulations that likely influence the decision to open a branch campus in certain locations but not the local economic conditions. Using this exogenous variation, we find an even larger positive effect. Given that many states use higher education as a strategy to induce economic growth, particularly in rural areas, this paper contributes some of the first empirical estimates of the impact of campus openings on regional economic activity and offers perspectives on using this approach as an economic development tool.

,1,ELON Musk was spotted looking down in the dumps on Thursday morning after shockingly losing $18 billion of his net worth.
The Tesla CEO was photographed in Los Angeles, California, on January 25 after spending a night at a luxury hotel.
A somber Musk wore a plain black long-sleeve shirt and pants as he walked the streets of the City of Angels.
He stuck his tongue to the inside of his cheek, looking seemingly upset.
The melancholy appearance may have something to do with the Tesla CEO losing some of his assets.
Musk took a $18.8 billion hit to his net worth on Thursday, according to Forbes.
The loss comes after Tesla's stock sank 13.2% to 180.38.
However, Musk continues to remain the world's richest person with an estimated net worth of $203.6 billion.
The news comes just one day after Tesla announced its vehicle production growth rate is projected to drop in 2024.
Tesla's announcement follows the company's stocks plummeting after the EV giant's reported Q4 earnings missed estimates.
A press release shared on Wednesday stated that the company's "vehicle volume growth rate may be notably lower than the growth rate achieved in 2023."
This indicates that the company would not reach estimates of 2.19 million for 2024, per Yahoo Business.
The company also announced that revenue for Q4 was $25.17 billion, compared to an estimated $25.87 billion.
While Tesla's vehicle production growth rate is projected to decrease in 2024, Musk noted that the company is set to start production on a next-gen vehicle in the second half of 2025.
"We are focused on bringing the next-generation platform to market as quickly as we can, with the plan to start production at Gigafactory Texas.
"This platform will revolutionize how vehicles are manufactured," Tesla said on an earnings call, per Yahoo Business.
"We're very far along on our next-gen low-cost vehicle; we're really excited about this.
"This is a revolutionary manufacturing system, far more advanced than any other in the world," Musk said on the call.
