The B61-12 nuclear bomb has officially joined the U.S. stockpile and received approval for operational deployment on the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber.
It's the first U.S. combat aircraft cleared to employ the advanced B61 variant operationally.
Within the U.S. stockpile, the B61 series stands as one of the longest-serving nuclear weapons. The B61-12 is designated to gradually replace the current B61-3, -4, and -7 variants in the future.
The first production B61-12 was completed in late 2021 and the weapons began being delivered to the U.S. military in 2022.

It is being termed a Long Range Anti Ship Hypersonic Missile (LRAShM) given the absence of any other known nomenclature for the missile family.
The government added, "The flight data ... confirmed the successful terminal maneuvers and impact with high degree of accuracy”.
The test-firing took place from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam island off the eastern coast of Odisha state
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called the test a "historic achievement" in a post on X and congratulated “DRDO, armed forces, and industry for stupendous achievement”.

,1,The US has reached a crucial milestone.
According to the Missile Defense Agency., the Defense Department’s advanced missile tracking satellites logged their first views of a hypersonic flight test.
Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) satellites were able to track a hypersonic system.
MDA didn’t disclose the date of the flight, which took off from Wallops Island in Virginia.
The agency said in a June 14 statement, “Initial reports show the sensors successfully collected data after launch. MDA will continue to assess flight data over the next several weeks.”
Viewers may note, that the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and Space Development Agency (SDA) are actively working on components of a hypersonic missile defense system to protect against hypersonic weapons and other emerging missile threats. This includes developing the tracking and transport layers of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) and various interceptor programs.
