The Roof of Africa is home to the last of the world’s Ethiopian Wolves. They inhabit a unique place, which rises 4.000 meters into the sky. Here, sun and rain clouds battle for supremacy, icy winds twist their way through the leathery leaves of lobelia, and when the night brings frost, there is nothing that reminds you of the Africa most commonly known.
This film tells the dramatic story of Megeti, a lone wolf who lost her pack and is suddenly left to fend for herself, wandering across the highlands on a quest to find a new home.
It is vital for the young wolf to find a new family and this quest pushes her into foreign territory, occupied by cattle breeders and other wolves. Her attempts to be accepted into a new pack are risky, but the better hunting grounds and group protection are too tempting.
Following Megeti’s daily efforts to connect with a new pack, the camera captures a variety of moments with depth and sensitivity, eventually arriving at the moment when the wolf’s perseverance is rewarded. However, the success story doesn’t last long and when an unwelcome guest arrives, the narrative takes a dramatic turn.

Afrobeats artist Fuse ODG was invited to take part in that edition, but refused, saying the single did ‘more harm than good’. He added that the organisers did not agree with his request to change some of the lyrics and imagery used in the campaign that are ‘degrading’ to Africans.
Now, with a new 40-year anniversary recording to be released in a few days, the MOBO award-winning artist is continuing to call out the issue – and has had other artists back him.
“I understand that there might be good intentions … but there’s a way to do that without also kicking them while they’re down,” says the British-Ghanaian artist.
Fuse ODG, who has recently launched an app about African history and languages, says the important thing is to lift up voices and tell stories that are often overlooked on the global stage – such as the fact that a cure for Ebola was discovered by a doctor from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dr Jean-Jacques Muyembe.
In response to the growing backlash, Bob Geldof, one of the founders of Band Aid, told the Conversation: “This little pop song has kept hundreds of thousands if not millions of people alive. In fact, just today [it] has given hundreds of thousands of pounds to help those running from the mass slaughter in Sudan, and enough cash to feed a further 8,000 children in the same affected areas of Ethiopia as 1984.”

With his company, Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos has thrown himself into space tourism and, in doing so, has revolutionised access to Space. He sees himself as the leader in this burgeoning ’New Space’ market. But he faces a determined opponent: Elon Musk, the eccentric head of SpaceX. Musk’s company has already disrupted the traditional aerospace launch industry and now he’s aiming for Mars.
When Musk first tried to buy a Russian rocket back in 2001, the chief engineer of the Russian Space Agency thought he was a joke. But that only made Musk more determined. Rather than buy rockets, he decided to build them and invested $100 million dollars, half his fortune at the time, in the creation of SpaceX. By 2008 SpaceX had a contract with NASA to supply flights to the International Space Station.
At around the same time Musk was founding SpaceX, Jeff Bezos was working on a secretive project to bring tourists to space. By 2015, he was ready to go public with a new rocket named the New Shepherd, the first reusable rocket to reach space. A year later, Musk announced an ambitious, widely ridiculed, plan to colonise Mars within 30 years. In the meantime, Bezos was working on plans to colonise the moon. When competition with China made returning to the moon a top priority for President Trump, there was one big question: which company would get the lucrative NASA moon contract?
Aside from colonising space and NASA contracts, the two billionaires are also racing to launch the most satellites. This allows them to deliver low latency broadband data services everywhere on the Earth… and to monopolise all future terrestrial communications. However, for those who act upon these words with child-like faith, this text is validated; these, and other miracles do occur. Some extraordinary miracles occurred in a Christian children’s ministry in a remote part of Kenya, as reported in a book by Jennifer Toledo. These included practical deliverance from the evils of witchcraft, which sound bizarre from our cultural perspective. Gordon happened to be working in that part of Africa, so he made a detour to check out the reality of these miracles, the results of which are reported here. We also discuss the purpose of such miracles.
God’s extraordinary miracles aren’t confined to places ‘far away’ in different cultures. Raf has been walking close to the Lord for many years, here in Australia as well as overseas. He relates some personal testimonies of remarkable healing, words of knowledge, and other modern-day miracles.

But in many cases, governments tacitly permit illicit cross-border commerce, or even devise informal arrangements to regulate it. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in the borderlands of Tunisia and Morocco, Max Gallien explains why states have long tolerated illegal trade across their borders and develops new ways to understand the political economy of smuggling. His book, “Smugglers and States – Negotiating the Maghreb at its Margins” examines the rules and agreements that govern smuggling in North Africa, tracing the involvement of states in these practices and their consequences for borderland communities. It demonstrates that, contrary to common assumptions about the effects of informal economies, smuggling can promote both state and social stability. States not only turn a blind eye to smuggling, they rely on it to secure political acquiescence and maintain order, because it provides income for otherwise neglected border communities. More recently, however, the securitization of borders, wars, political change, and the pandemic have put these arrangements under pressure. Gallien explores the renegotiation of the role of smuggling, showing how stability turns into vulnerability and why some groups have been able to thrive while others have been pushed further to the margins.

Max Gallien is a political scientist specialising in the politics of informal and illegal economies, the political economy of taxation and the modern politics of the Middle East and North Africa. He is a research fellow at the Institute of Development Studies and a Research Lead and the International Centre for Tax and Development. He is the author of “Smugglers and States – Negotiating the Maghreb at its Margins” (Columbia University Press, 2024).

,1,The Roof of Africa is home to the last of the world’s Ethiopian Wolves. They inhabit a unique place, which rises 4.000 meters into the sky. Here, sun and rain clouds battle for supremacy, icy winds twist their way through the leathery leaves of lobelia, and when the night brings frost, there is nothing that reminds you of the Africa most commonly known.
This film tells the dramatic story of Megeti, a lone wolf who lost her pack and is suddenly left to fend for herself, wandering across the highlands on a quest to find a new home.
It is vital for the young wolf to find a new family and this quest pushes her into foreign territory, occupied by cattle breeders and other wolves. Her attempts to be accepted into a new pack are risky, but the better hunting grounds and group protection are too tempting.
Following Megeti’s daily efforts to connect with a new pack, the camera captures a variety of moments with depth and sensitivity, eventually arriving at the moment when the wolf’s perseverance is rewarded. However, the success story doesn’t last long and when an unwelcome guest arrives, the narrative takes a dramatic turn.
