,1,You asked, we answered! "I immigrated to Canada where everyone celebrates Christmas. How should I reply when someone says Merry Christmas to me and how should I deal with my colleagues at work?" Dr. Shabir Ally says its important to build goodwill with fellow citizens and not isolate ourselves from the wider populace. Muslims who have concerns about saying "Merry Christmas" have a simplistic view of Christianity and what Christmas entails. The celebration of Christmas itself does not necessarily mean that one is worshiping Jesus. While we cannot worship Jesus, saying "Merry Christmas" just means you recognize that this is a time of year that many people around you consider important. So don't be like the Grinch who stole Christmas, he says. Speak a kind and good word to others, as the Quran advises us to do.

,1,A viewer asks, "What does the Quran say about polygamy and how common was polygamy in Islamic history?" Dr. Shabir Ally responds that polygamy has been and remains a minor practice for Muslims. He says that Quran 4:3 provided a solution to a problem that existed at the time. It encouraged men to take on additional responsibility after the Battle of Uhud to provide for widows and orphans. He cautions that some people run away with the verse thinking it's a license to marry multiple wives, but he says this is wrong, since the verse is an "if-then" clause, and in addition, it prioritizes justice. He explains that Muslims in modern times recognize that the practice of polygamy is often abusive to women and try to minimize the effects of suffering in these relationships. Dr. Shabir points to 4:129, which warns of the difficulty of doing justice to multiple wives. He advises that if the problem that gave rise to the Quranic revelation persists, then we have a solution in our scriptures. But due to the real problems arising from polygamous marriages, we learn a lesson from the Quran that it is better to marry only one woman.

,1,You asked, we answered! "Why should the parents of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) go to hell when they didn't even witness the prophethood?" Dr. Shabir Ally acknowledges there has been debate about this question among scholars and points out that the Quran 5:48 says that God will judge people according to what has come to them.

,1,#Mahsa Amini died in police custody after being charged with violating laws about modest clothing in #Iran. Women are taking to the streets in protest. Should an Islamic state enforce the hijab? Dr. Shabir Ally says the Muslim polity has a basic responsibility to command good and forbid wrong. He says Muslim woman's clothing has been much misunderstood in Islamic law, such that covering of the entire body is presented as a given, rather than recognizing that there are gradations to modesty. He says that during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, it is not so clear that the modesty standards that we consider essential were in place. Dr. Safiyyah Ally says that even if something is deemed obligatory religiously, that does not mean the state must have laws commanding it. Too many laws make people rebel, but she says a Muslim culture will naturally develop in Muslim majority countries which will guide the people in developing social mores.

,1,You asked, we answered! "I used to believe that Islam is the only way to God. However, I'm currently studying in Japan, and I came to realize there are other ways to God. For example, through a long meditation, you are able to tap into your higher self and achieve ultimate peace, through connecting to or becoming integrated to God, all of which I believed could only be achieved through prayer. Why do you think that Islam is the only way to God?" Dr. Shabir Ally says that while he believes Islam is the best way to God, he doesn't believe it's the only way. There could be other paths leading to God. And in the end, God's mercy encompasses all.
