,1,You asked, we answered! "I used to believe that Islam is the only way to God. However, I'm currently studying in Japan, and I came to realize there are other ways to God. For example, through a long meditation, you are able to tap into your higher self and achieve ultimate peace, through connecting to or becoming integrated to God, all of which I believed could only be achieved through prayer. Why do you think that Islam is the only way to God?" Dr. Shabir Ally says that while he believes Islam is the best way to God, he doesn't believe it's the only way. There could be other paths leading to God. And in the end, God's mercy encompasses all.

,1,You asked, we answered! "I immigrated to Canada where everyone celebrates Christmas. How should I reply when someone says Merry Christmas to me and how should I deal with my colleagues at work?" Dr. Shabir Ally says its important to build goodwill with fellow citizens and not isolate ourselves from the wider populace. Muslims who have concerns about saying "Merry Christmas" have a simplistic view of Christianity and what Christmas entails. The celebration of Christmas itself does not necessarily mean that one is worshiping Jesus. While we cannot worship Jesus, saying "Merry Christmas" just means you recognize that this is a time of year that many people around you consider important. So don't be like the Grinch who stole Christmas, he says. Speak a kind and good word to others, as the Quran advises us to do.

,1,A viewer asks, "What does the Quran say about polygamy and how common was polygamy in Islamic history?" Dr. Shabir Ally responds that polygamy has been and remains a minor practice for Muslims. He says that Quran 4:3 provided a solution to a problem that existed at the time. It encouraged men to take on additional responsibility after the Battle of Uhud to provide for widows and orphans. He cautions that some people run away with the verse thinking it's a license to marry multiple wives, but he says this is wrong, since the verse is an "if-then" clause, and in addition, it prioritizes justice. He explains that Muslims in modern times recognize that the practice of polygamy is often abusive to women and try to minimize the effects of suffering in these relationships. Dr. Shabir points to 4:129, which warns of the difficulty of doing justice to multiple wives. He advises that if the problem that gave rise to the Quranic revelation persists, then we have a solution in our scriptures. But due to the real problems arising from polygamous marriages, we learn a lesson from the Quran that it is better to marry only one woman.

,1,You asked, we answered! "Why should the parents of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) go to hell when they didn't even witness the prophethood?" Dr. Shabir Ally acknowledges there has been debate about this question among scholars and points out that the Quran 5:48 says that God will judge people according to what has come to them.

,1,#Mahsa Amini died in police custody after being charged with violating laws about modest clothing in #Iran. Women are taking to the streets in protest. Should an Islamic state enforce the hijab? Dr. Shabir Ally says the Muslim polity has a basic responsibility to command good and forbid wrong. He says Muslim woman's clothing has been much misunderstood in Islamic law, such that covering of the entire body is presented as a given, rather than recognizing that there are gradations to modesty. He says that during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, it is not so clear that the modesty standards that we consider essential were in place. Dr. Safiyyah Ally says that even if something is deemed obligatory religiously, that does not mean the state must have laws commanding it. Too many laws make people rebel, but she says a Muslim culture will naturally develop in Muslim majority countries which will guide the people in developing social mores.

,1,The Satanic Verses is a term used in academic literature to refer to purported verses of the Quran which, according to some narratives, were once recited by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and taken to be a part of the Quran, but soon after denounced by the Prophet as having a Satanic origin and removed, leaving behind a strict monotheistic text. It became infamous because from a non-Muslim point of view, it would seem that the Prophet could not distinguish between what is Satanic and what is from God. Dr. Shabir Ally explains that the story doesn't arise from the most authentic narratives of the Prophet's life, and he shares John Burton's theory about how the story was concocted and why Muslims embraced it.

,1,Taliban spokesmen have announced that women should stay home if they do not have important work outside. And women should wear a chador and cover their faces, with male relatives facing penalties if they disobey. They claim these are orders from God, and their latest directives come on top of other restrictions on women, limiting their ability to work, go to school and travel. Dr. Shabir Ally expresses consternation at these statements and says they reflect a blind following of outdated opinions from those who are neither God nor God's Prophet.

,1,A viewer asks, "I recently saw one of your videos on evolution in which you indicated that one of the ways to bridge the gap between Islam and evolution is to accept that evolution may have been a miracle of God in itself, and it doesn't have to contradict Islam...If we look at man through the lens of evolution, homo sapiens gradually came into being through the process of evolution...There was no distinctive line where the perfect homo sapien suddenly appeared, but rather the process was gradual. If we are to assume that evolution may be a miracle of God, how do we address the issue of Adam being the first man?"
Dr. Shabir Ally explains that it is not necessary to say that Adam was the first human being based on the Quranic narrative. There are indications that Adam and his spouse may not have been alone, and it is possible he may have been selected from a pool of human beings to be a prophet to them.

,1,Modern thinkers often claim that human beings have invented #God. For example, Reza Aslan’s “God: A Human #History” makes the argument that what we believe about God says more about us than about God. Is God actually man-made? What reason could there be for inventing God? How would the idea of God change or evolve depending on the peoples involved? Dr. Shabir Ally joins Safiyyah Ally to discuss whether this argument makes sense from a #Muslim point of view.

,1,Ishmael is known as Abraham’s son in Judaism, Christianity and #Islam. But his role is depicted quite differently in the Bible and #Quran. In the Quran, for example, Ishmael works with his father to build the Kabah; in the Bible, Ishmael never went to #Mecca. Join Dr. Shabir Ally and Safiyyah Ally as we continue our series, Prophets in the Bible and Quran.
