The Crna Legija, or Black Legion, was a fearsome Croat Elite Brigade, which consisted mainly of Bosniak and Croat refugees from eastern Bosnia, where the Chetniks carried some massacres and atrocities. This feeling of vendetta made the Legion become notable by the amount of massacres and cruelty against Chetniks (Serbs). After disbanded, many of the ex-Legionnaires still used the notorious black uniform.
It was leaded by Rafael Boban and Jure FrancetiΔ, this last one being considered by many a possible successor of the Poglavnik, dr. Ante PaveliΔ.
FrancetiΔ fell in battle crossing the Drina River (as portraied in the song), while Boban disappeared in 1945. Many thought he was murdered by partisans, while some versions suggest that he joined the Crusaders (Croatian post-war guerrilla determined to expel the partisans and rebuild the NDH), or fleed to the US, joining the US. Army and falling in battle against the communists in the Korea War
