April 14, 2023 — Horowitz: Time to end FBI group infiltration and surveillance schemes

We now know that the government creates more criminality with these operations than it solves. Let’s not forget that in 2016, thanks to the release of the 28 pages of the classified Saudi portion of the 9/11 Commission report, we know that the San Diego cell, which hijacked the plane flown into the Pentagon, rented a room together with an FBI informant. In 2020, while taking English and flight lessons, Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi rented a room in the residence of Abdussattar Shaikh, co-founder of the Islamic Centre of San Diego, who had been an FBI informant since 1994. Yet the FBI tells us it didn’t find out about this until three days after the attacks. What did the FBI know, and when did they know it?

the time has come to trade what little security we might have had from these programs in exchange for liberty from our own government violating our rights worse than what any external enemy has ever done to us.

To that end, 90% of the FBI’s $11 billion budget should be devolved to the states to engage in their own state law enforcement activities to replace the FBI, except for a few categories, such as international child sex trafficking. Likewise, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s $2.9 billion budget needs to be stripped of all domestic spying programs, and Homeland Security Investigations needs its $2.3 billion transferred to ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Office, which deals with removing criminal aliens, not targeting Americans.

Enough with the talk. Now is time for Republicans to deliver on their promises to defund and defang weaponized surveillance against Americans by utilizing the budget bills. If they wait much longer, it will likely be the last opportunity we have to even mount political opposition at all.

APRIL 11, 2023 — Conspiracy theories cause populism to rise, claims Spanish study

Two online surveys and an experiment

The authors started their study by carrying out an online survey of 2,887 adults. The aim was to establish if there was a link between those people who believe in four distinct conspiracy theories—those relating to 9/11, those relating to the pharmaceutical industry, those that claim that the world is dominated by secret groups, and those making claims about alien life—and a set of populist statements such as "many members of government are shameless" or "those who don't agree with my political views are misinformed." The authors indeed found a correlation: people who embrace conspiracy theories usually have populist attitudes.

The second part of the study involved a survey-based experiment: a group of participants were chosen at random and exposed to a conspiracy theory relating to the 9/11 attacks. Afterwards, they were asked a set of questions to find out their opinion about a number of strongly populist statements. The people who had been exposed to the conspiracy theory were much more likely to agree with them than those in the control group.

I hope this letter finds you well. I recently read your interview regarding your team's research on right-wing extremism and found it to be quite fascinating. However, I wanted to reach out to you regarding your use of the phrase "conspiracy theories" in relation to the 9/11 truth movement.

As someone who is seeking transparency, accountability, and justice for the events of 9/11, I take issue with the label of "conspiracy theory" that is often used to dismiss our concerns. The official narrative of 9/11, which has been used to justify wars and infringements on civil liberties, could itself be considered a conspiracy theory.

I understand that there are some who take their beliefs to extreme and unfounded levels, but it is unfair to paint the entire movement with such a broad brush. We are simply seeking answers to questions that have yet to be adequately addressed by the government and mainstream media.

I ask that you consider this perspective and approach the 9/11 truth movement with an open mind. We are not extremists, and our views are not limited to the left or right. We are simply seeking the truth and justice for the victims of 9/11. See 911Lawyers.org

Apr 10, 2023 — Mayor Adams, open the WTC records: The Ground Zero files held by New York City must be released

As a NYPD officer in 2001, Eric Adams was a first responder on 9/11 and the days that followed the terrorist destruction of the World Trade Center and the murder of thousands of New Yorkers, when the federal government assured everyone that the air at Ground Zero was fine to breathe.

Adams and all the other responders who toiled on The Pile for the rescue of the injured and the recovery of the bodies and the rebuilding later on were lied to. The air was not safe and a great many people, from firefighters to cops to construction workers, have gotten sick and died, with billions being paid in compensation for their suffering and to cover their medical costs.

The truth must come out and now, as mayor, Adams must open up the city’s files regarding the disaster.

Reps. Jerry Nadler and Dan Goldman have renewed a longstanding request for Adams to release any relevant documents about the WTC being held in the files.

Instead of saying yes, Adams is ducking behind his lawyers and saying that he’ll readily hand over everything if Congress passes a law shielding New York City from being sued brd on what’s in the hidden papers: “We are happy to work with your offices to determine potential federal funding sources and any necessary federal legislation to make production of documents economically and legally feasible for the City of New York.”

Such lawsuits are unlikely, as anyone who received a settlement from the federal Victim Compensation Fund had to agree to not take legal action. Furthermore, in the weeks after 9/11, Congress put a cap of $350 million in claims on how much New York City could be held liable.

As the world knows well, Rudy Giuliani was mayor at the time and his administration created and collected records about the biggest catastrophe in New York history. Neither Mike Bloomberg nor Bill de Blasio, listening to their lawyers, relinquished the documents. More than 20 years on, Adams must direct his administration to come clean.

Gretzky played for the New York Rangers in the final years of his illustrious career and retired as a member of the team. During his time in the "Big Apple", he formed a special bond with the city and its people. His gesture of honoring a 9/11 victim is another example of his love and respect for New York and its citizens.

Wayne Gretzky recounted how he was in Las Vegas for an event when he was approached by Barbara and Bernie Heeran, whose son Charlie was killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. Gretzky and his wife were at the pool when the Heerans recognized him and shared their heartbreaking story. Gretzky said,

,Wednesday, November 29, 2023 Hoover Institution | Stanford University On behalf of Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific Region, the Hoover Institution held Taiwan's 2024 General Elections: The Campaign So Far on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm PT. On January 13, 2024, Taiwan voters will go to the polls to elect a new president and legislature. The results could have major implications for Taiwan’s relationship with the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), as well as the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific. In this event, three experts on Taiwan’s domestic politics weigh in on the state of the race, including the leading presidential candidates and parties, the messages of each campaign, and the issues animating the race so far. As the campaign enters the home stretch, they discuss the role of the PRC and the United States in the election, the most likely outcomes, and the consequences for the trilateral U.S.-Taiwan-PRC relationship. FEATURING Chiaoning Su is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations at Oakland University, where she also serves as the Director of the Barry M. Klein Center for Culture and Globalization. Su is a communication scholar (Ph.D., 2015, Temple University) with a dual focus on two interrelated strands: the journalism of crisis and journalism in crisis. Her first line of inquiry delves into the representation and production of crisis news, while her second line of research centers on the role of journalism in the context of diminishing democracy. Her work has been published in Media, Culture, and Society, International Journal of Communication, Asian Journal of Communication, Taiwan Journal of Democracy, and Communication Review. Prior to her academic career, Su gained valuable professional experience as a communication specialist at Ogilvy Public Relations and worked on several political campaigns in Taiwan. Dennis Lu-Chung Weng is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Sam Houston State University and the founding Director of the Asia Pacific Peace Research Institute (APPRI). He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2014. Dr. Weng has formerly taught at institutions including Wesleyan University and SUNY-Cortland. He currently holds research fellowships at Stellenbosch University and National Chengchi University, Taiwan. His research centers on comparative politics, international relations, and the dynamics between domestic political behavior and international politics, particularly in the US and Asia-Pacific regions. A recognized expert in his field, Dr. Weng's insights have been featured in scholarly publications, op-eds, and various media outlets. He is a noted commentator on US China-Taiwan relations and political events in both the US and Asia. MODERATOR Kharis Templeman is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and part of the Project on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific. Templeman is a political scientist (Ph.D. 2012, Michigan) with research interests in Taiwan politics, democratization, elections and election management, party system development, and politics and security issues in Pacific Asia. INTRODUCTION BY Larry Diamond is the William L. Anjali Adukia is an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and the College and the director of the MiiE Lab (Messages, Identity, and Inclusion in Education). In her work, she is interested in understanding how to reduce inequalities such that children from historically disadvantaged backgrounds have equal opportunities to fully develop their potential. Alex Eble is Associate Professor of Economics and Education at Columbia’s graduate school of education, Teachers College. His research focuses primarily on two key themes: the economics of education in low-income contexts, and the economics of beliefs and information applied to education and inequality. Emileigh Harrison is a PhD candidate studying Public Policy at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on understanding barriers to education (such as financial constraints or beliefs about academic abilities shaped by representation) and the role that education policy can play in eliminating them. Hakizumwami Birali Runesha is the Associate Vice President for Research Computing and founding Director of the Research Computing Center (RCC) at The University of Chicago. He is the former Director of Scientific Computing and Applications at the University of Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, Research Associate at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Assistant Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Kinshasa. Dr Runesha has more than 28 years of experience in high performance computing, data science and scientific software development. Teodora Szasz is an Innovation Director at Philips, managing innovation projects (such as AI-based diagnosis of cardiac diseases) between Philips and UChicago Medicine. Steven Davis is the Thomas W. And Susan B. Ford Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and professor of economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He studies business dynamics, labor markets, and public policy. He advises the U.S. Congressional Budget Office and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, co-organizes the Asian Monetary Policy Forum and is co-creator of the Economic Policy Uncertainty Indices, the Survey of Business Uncertainty, and the Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes. Elina Ribakova, Piroska Nagy Mohácsi, Tatiana Evdokimova, and Olga Ponomarenko speaking on Central Banks and Policy Communication: How Emerging Markets Have Outperformed the Fed and ECB. The Hoover Institution hosts a seminar series on Using Text as Data in Policy Analysis, co-organized by Steven J. Davis and Justin Grimmer. These seminars will feature applications of natural language processing, structured human readings, and machine learning methods to text as data to examine policy issues in economics, history, national security, political science, and other fields. Elina Ribakova is a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. She is also a nonresident fellow at the Brussels-based economic policy think tank Bruegel and a director of the International Affairs Program and vice president for foreign policy at the Kyiv School of Economics. Her research focuses on global markets, economic statecraft, and economic sovereignty. She has been a senior adjunct fellow at the Center for a New American Security (2020–23) and a research fellow at the London School of Economics (2015–17). Piroska Nagy Mohácsi is a visiting professor at the Firoz Lalji Global Hub & Institute for Africa at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her key research areas include financial resilience and stability, central bank reform, digital currencies, fiscal and monetary policy mix and related governance issues, and emerging-market policies. She previously held senior positions at the EBRD (2008-15), the IMF (1986-2008), and Fitch Ratings (2003-4). Tatiana Evdokimova is the senior economist at the Joint Vienna Institute. She previously worked in the emerging markets research team of Nordea Bank, where she was responsible for macroeconomic analysis and forecasting with a focus on financial market trends. Prior to that, she was an economist at the economic service of the French embassy in Moscow conducting analytical research on economic developments in countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Evdokimova holds a PhD in international economics. Her research interests lie in the areas of monetary policy, international capital flows, and climate change. Olga Ponomarenko has been the head of quantitative analytics at Caplight since 2021. She previously worked as a quantitative analyst at Barclays and economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Steven J. Davis is the Thomas W. and Susan B. Ford Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. He studies business dynamics, labor markets, and public policy. He advises the U.S. Congressional Budget Office and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, co-organizes the Asian Monetary Policy Forum and is co-creator of the Economic Policy Uncertainty Indices, the Survey of Business Uncertainty, and the Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes. Davis hosts “Economics, Applied,” a podcast series sponsored by the Hoover Institution. Justin Grimmer is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a professor in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. The jobs, performed on smartphones, produce data that help train and evaluate AI models. Several job design features help overcome practical barriers to work and sidestep social norms that inhibit work for pay by married women. Jalota tells Steve how this idea can work in practice, how outcomes for women in these jobs can be evaluated, the broader effects of drawing women into this type of work, and what is next on her research agenda. This episode was recorded on November 13, 2023. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS: Suhani Jalota is a PhD candidate in Health Economics at the Stanford School of Medicine, and a Knight Hennessy Scholar. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Global Health from Duke University (2016). She is also the founder and director of a women's health organization, the Myna Mahila Foundation, based in Mumbai, India. She has been working in urban slum areas and rural communities researching and designing strategies on projects including the health of adolescent girls, as well as public policies concerning water, sanitation, and social protection. Her economics honors thesis topic looks at how slum redevelopment has negatively affected child health outcomes, even as rapid urbanization calls for policies that keep people healthy and safe. She wants to further explore national health systems, their design, as well as challenges and outcomes, especially from a developing country context. Steven J. Davis is the Thomas W. and Susan B. Ford senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR). He is an economic adviser to the U.S. Congressional Budget Office, elected fellow of the Society of Labor Economists, and consultant to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He co-founded the Economic Policy Uncertainty project, the U.S. Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes, the Global Survey of Working Arrangements, the Survey of Business Uncertainty, and the Stock Market Jumps project. He co-organizes the Asian Monetary Policy Forum, held annually in Singapore. Before joining Hoover, Davis was on the faculty at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, serving as both distinguished service professor and deputy dean of the faculty.
