,1,Join Post reporters as President Biden makes an extraordinary visit to Tel Aviv, amid Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas. Biden flew to the Middle East overnight Tuesday at a time of high instability in the region. Tensions rose yet further after a blast at al-Ahli Hospital in central Gaza City that the Palestinian Health Ministry said killed hundreds of people, with Hamas and Israel blaming each other. A summit that the president was to attend in Amman, Jordan, was abruptly canceled.
Biden plans to meet with families in Israel that are mourning the killings of loved ones by Hamas or are worrying about missing loved ones whose status is unknown, White House spokesman John Kirby said late Tuesday aboard Air Force One. The president embraced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on arriving at Tel Aviv airport in a show of support for the Israeli government.
Libby Casey will anchor live coverage along with James Hohmann in The Washington Post’s newsroom. Rhonda Colvin will be live from Capitol Hill, and White House reporter Tyler Pager is traveling with the president. Read more: https://wapo.st/3QlQQOL. ,1,Join Post reporters as President Biden speaks about the fighting that has escalated in Israel and Gaza, with more than 1,600 people reported killed. Biden’s remarks come one day after he confirmed 11 Americans are among the dead and warned that others may be hostages of Hamas. Biden released a joint statement Monday alongside the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and the U.K., expressing staunch support for Israel, and Biden’s administration is sending the United States’ most advanced aircraft carrier to the eastern Mediterranean to lend further backup.
Israel formally declared war against Hamas on Sunday, one day after Hamas militants surprised Israel with an all-out assault from Gaza by air, land and sea. That attack came a day after the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. In Israel, more than 900 people have been killed, authorities said. Palestinian authorities said at least 765 people have been killed in Gaza.
Dozens of civilians, including the elderly, women and children, are being held hostage in Gaza, according to Israel Defense Forces and Israeli media. A militant group in Gaza says it is holding Israeli soldiers captive. A spokesman for Hamas’s military arm said on Monday that if Israel conducted attacks “without prior warning” on people in Gaza, captured Israeli civilians would be executed. The threat came after Israel announced a siege of Gaza earlier the same day.
