,1,Join Post reporters as President Biden makes an extraordinary visit to Tel Aviv, amid Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas. Biden flew to the Middle East overnight Tuesday at a time of high instability in the region. Tensions rose yet further after a blast at al-Ahli Hospital in central Gaza City that the Palestinian Health Ministry said killed hundreds of people, with Hamas and Israel blaming each other. A summit that the president was to attend in Amman, Jordan, was abruptly canceled.
Biden plans to meet with families in Israel that are mourning the killings of loved ones by Hamas or are worrying about missing loved ones whose status is unknown, White House spokesman John Kirby said late Tuesday aboard Air Force One. The president embraced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on arriving at Tel Aviv airport in a show of support for the Israeli government.

,1,Join Post reporters as President Biden speaks about the fighting that has escalated in Israel and Gaza, with more than 1,600 people reported killed. Biden’s remarks come one day after he confirmed 11 Americans are among the dead and warned that others may be hostages of Hamas. Biden released a joint statement Monday alongside the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and the U.K., expressing staunch support for Israel, and Biden’s administration is sending the United States’ most advanced aircraft carrier to the eastern Mediterranean to lend further backup.
Israel formally declared war against Hamas on Sunday, one day after Hamas militants surprised Israel with an all-out assault from Gaza by air, land and sea. That attack came a day after the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. In Israel, more than 900 people have been killed, authorities said. Palestinian authorities said at least 765 people have been killed in Gaza.
Dozens of civilians, including the elderly, women and children, are being held hostage in Gaza, according to Israel Defense Forces and Israeli media. A militant group in Gaza says it is holding Israeli soldiers captive. A spokesman for Hamas’s military arm said on Monday that if Israel conducted attacks “without prior warning” on people in Gaza, captured Israeli civilians would be executed. The threat came after Israel announced a siege of Gaza earlier the same day.

,1,Join Washington Post reporters as former president Donald Trump turns himself in to authorities in Miami on seven federal charges, including making false statements, conspiracy to obstruct justice and willful retention of national defense secrets in violation of the Espionage Act. The charges carry the potential of years in prison if he is found guilty. Trump is the first former U.S. president to face federal criminal charges and to be twice indicted. He has denied any wrongdoing.
The investigation is being led by special counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed after the discovery that hundreds of classified documents were taken to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home when the former president left the White House. The criminal probe centers on whether Trump took government secrets with him and obstructed an investigation into what documents he might have kept at his estate.
This is Trump’s second indictment in three months; he was indicted in New York in March on state allegations of falsifying business documents related to hush money payments. He has pleaded not guilty. The former president also is under investigation for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Legal experts say Trump, who is the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, still can legally campaign with a pending indictment and even if he is convicted.

,1,Join Washington Post reporters as Sam Altman, CEO of artificial intelligence research lab OpenAI, testifies before a Senate subcommittee on privacy, technology and the law. Altman will discuss efforts to keep artificial intelligence in check at a moment when the technology’s advancements and influence are being felt far beyond Silicon Valley.
The hearing comes as policymakers in Washington are facing pressure to address the potential risks of artificial intelligence. OpenAI, which released the AI-driven chatbot ChatGPT in November, has triggered a wave of AI innovation — and surging popularity. The newest version of ChatGPT can do much more than answer questions: It can also analyze images and mimic human speech. Companies say AI can help users save time and resources. But critics point to the technology’s potential to spread misinformation, replace jobs or otherwise cause significant harm to users. In his first appearance before Congress, the OpenAI CEO is expected to be grilled on those concerns.

,1,Former president Donald Trump has been indicted in the Southern District of New York, in a long-running investigation into hush-money payments made to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels during Trump’s 2016 campaign. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his investigative team were probing whether Trump falsified business records connected to the payments in a way that could constitute a campaign finance violation. Trump is the first ex-president to be charged with a crime.
Bragg’s investigation involved $130,000 paid by former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, who has said he fronted the money involved in the Daniels transactions to ensure her silence ahead of the 2016 election and was later reimbursed by Trump. Those payments were erroneously classified as legal fees, previous investigations have found.
Trump, who is seeking to return to the White House in 2024 and leading in most polls of Republican voters, is also the focus of criminal probes in Georgia and D.C. related to efforts to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory and Trump’s handling of classified material at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida home and private club.

The panel is planning to vote to subpoena former president Donald Trump, according to three individuals with knowledge of the vote. The individuals did not say whether they are seeking the former president’s direct testimony or more documents beyond those the committee has already received.
The committee is also expected to highlight newly obtained Secret Service records showing how Trump was repeatedly alerted to brewing violence that day — and still sought to stoke the conflict — as it seeks to tie together its case for Trump’s culpability for the dark day in U.S. history. No live witnesses are expected to testify.
