His pugnacity in the ring would transfer to his work with the unions, the Labour Party, and to the top of British government.
Born in North Wales in 1938 and raised in Yorkshire and Cheshire, John Leslie Prescott joined the Merchant Navy after failing the 11+ and leaving school at 15.
He was a member of the National Union of Seamen and was heavily involved in the national strike of 1966.
He became Labour MP for Kingston upon Hull East in the 1970 election. Although he was from the traditional socialist wing of the party, in the early 90s he became an enthusiastic backer of the New Labour project. First helping then-leader John Smith to ditch the union block vote in favour of ‘one member, one vote’. And then, after Smith’s sudden death in 1994, Prescott was elected as deputy Labour leader with Tony Blair securing the top job.
The two men could not have been more different. Whilst the smooth-talking Blair was the man to relay the New Labour message, the unvarnished Prescott rolled into towns on his battle bus to rally traditional Labour supporters.

Thousands of left wing supporters gathered in Paris' Republique plaza on Sunday to protest the results.
Individuals set off fireworks in the plaza and in the streets of the capital.
Some voiced their concerns about the first round outcome, fearing that the country is moving towards extremism.

Biden conceded at a rally Friday in North Carolina that he's not the debater he used to be, while members of his party and campaign team closed ranks around him in an effort to shut down talk of replacing him with another nominee. Biden's meandering answers and struggles to respond to Trump prompted The New York Times to declare that he should exit the race altogether.
Meanwhile Donald Trump piled on the pressure over Joe Biden's debate performance during a Virginia rally, suggesting it could be “a big moment” in the campaign.

,1,This footage was taken inside Kenya’s ransacked parliament building after violent demonstrations rocked the capital.
Thousands of Kenyans have been protesting against new tax proposals in the government’s annual budget legislation.
The protests brought Nairobi’s central business district to a standstill as police threw tear-gas cannisters and fired water cannons on demonstrators who advanced towards parliament buildings, where lawmakers debated the finance bill.
Two protesters have so far died and hundreds have been injured.
Protesters, mostly young citizens, began demonstrations on Tuesday and are demanding lawmakers vote against the new legislation.
Using hashtags like #RejectFinanceBill2024 and #OccupyParliament, protesters have held demonstrations against the finance bill since 18 June 2024.
The new taxes would include a 2.75% levy on income for the national medical insurance plan, as well as increased taxes on vegetable oil and fuel.

,1,The dramatic armed siege of a TV station in Ecuador is just the latest symptom of a state in chaos.
Nearly two dozen gangs have now been designated terrorist groups by the government, and a nationwide curfew is in place.
So how has one of the most peaceful countries in Latin America become one of the most violent?
Sharing borders with South America’s top two cocaine producing countries, Columbia and Peru, Ecuador is ideally placed for drug traffickers wanting to ship cocaine to the US and Europe. And as a major exporter of bananas, coffee and cocoa, the nation’s large international ports are the perfect base for global drug smuggling operations.
Then came the pandemic, which battered the economy, and allowed Mexican and Colombian cartels to recruit desperate locals into their ranks. Since 2016 Ecuador’s homicide rate has risen by almost 500%.
The nation’s now overcrowded prisons are full of cartel members, who wage a deadly war on each other while behind bars, killing hundreds in the process. Ecuador’s security forces have been repeatedly forced to launch huge armed raids into the prisons to rescue guards and restore order.
As disorder has spread, and following the assassination of several politicians, Ecuador’s government has ‘declared war’ on the cartels. With the gang that raided the TV station threatening to execute anyone found on the streets after 11pm, there are fears that this escalation will lead to a fresh wave of violence and chaos across Ecuador.

At least 48 people have died, with the death toll expected to rise. Authorities say they are in a “race against time” to rescue trapped survivors.
The 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit Japan’s northern coast on Monday. The quake and subsequent fires damaged hundreds of buildings. Around 57,000 people were evacuated, and tsunami warnings were issued across northern Japan.
Those tsunami warnings have now been lifted, but Japan’s Prime Minister says the crisis is far from over.

,1,The US and UK have launched a third wave of strikes against 36 Houthi targets across Yemen. Footage circulating on social media apparently shows the impact of some of the strikes.
The US and UK say they are attempting to stop the Houthis attacking commercial ships travelling through the Red Sea. The Houthis claim they are only targeting ships linked to Israel, but many ships without any link have also been attacked.
On Friday there was a mass rally in Sanaa, Yemen’s Houthi controlled capital city, in support of Hamas in Gaza. The crowd chanted the Houthi slogan in Arabic: “God is great, death to America, death to Israel, curse on Jews, victory to Islam”.
The US and UK deny that this third round of strikes represents an escalation in hostilities. But it’s unclear if any of the strikes so far have had the intended effect of deterring the Houthis. And with the US also having launched strikes against Iran backed militants in Syria and Iraq on Friday there are concerns that further escalation may now become unavoidable.

,1,Residents were evacuated from small coastal towns near Cape Town in South Africa as wildfires swept down from surrounding mountains and burned out of control for a second day on Tuesday.
Authorities ordered a full evacuation of Pringle Bay, a coastal village popular with holidaymakers about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Cape Town. People evacuated parts of the nearby town of Betty's Bay on Monday.
Wildfires are relatively common in the mountain ranges around Cape Town and further down the coast in the South African summer, but it’s unusual for towns to be completely evacuated.
The fires began Monday and were fueled by the hot, dry weather and strong coastal winds. Annelie Rabie, mayor of the Overstrand municipality that oversees the towns, said as many as six wildfires had broken out in the area. Four had been contained or extinguished, she said, but one was heading straight for Pringle Bay.
The Overstrand council said a small number of homes had been gutted. No injuries were reported but authorities issued a 'code red,' meaning the fires presented a serious and immediate danger to people and property.
Around 95% of a nearby nature reserve had also burned, the government said.
Residents of Pringle Bay were moving to a nearby town, local authorities said, while firefighters battled to get remaining fires under control.
Helicopters were scooping up water from the ocean and dumping it on the fires, a common tactic in the region.
Wildfires have broken out in numerous parts of South Africa's Western Cape province in recent weeks, including one on the slopes of the world-famous Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town over the weekend. It was quickly brought under control.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said its firefighting crews were working on wildfires in four regions of the Western Cape. One fire had been burning for nine days.
A huge fire swept across Table Mountain in 2021, causing extensive damage and taking days to put out.
The main causes of the wildfires are discarded cigarettes, people lighting cooking fires or burning debris and sometimes arson, according to the Western Cape local government. Coastal winds fan the blazes and can make them unpredictable.

,1,This is the moment CCTV footage captured Israeli forces disguised as civilian women and medical workers storming a hospital on Tuesday in the occupied West Bank, killing at least three Palestinian militants in a raid.
The forces were seen patting down one man who kneeled against a wall with his arms raised.
Israeli forces opened fire inside the wards of the Ibn Sina Hospital in the town of Jenin, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
The Israeli army said that the militants were using the Ibn Sina Hospital hospital as a hideout but there has been no evidence to support this claim.

,1,Former prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for ‘exposing official secrets’.
On Sunday there were scuffles between police and Khan’s supporters, this latest move may now further inflame tensions.
Imran Khan was ousted as prime minister in 2022 and has been under investigation for a range of alleged offences ever since.
Khan is currently serving a three-year prison sentence after being convicted of corruption last year.
The former prime minister and cricket star claims the charges against him are all politically motivated.
Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party is one of the three major political parties in Pakistan.
Khan has been barred from standing in future elections on account of him having a criminal conviction.
This latest prison sentence may now further inflame political tensions in the run-up to the national parliamentary elections next week.

,1,Three American troops have been killed after a drone attack on a US base near the Syria-Jordan border.
Iran denies having any involvement in the attack on the Tower 22 airbase situated in Rueben, northeast Jordan.
Us officials say at least 34 others were injured.
In response, while on a campaign rally in South Carolina, President Joe Biden insisted action will be taken.
This drone attack comes after months of instability in the Middle East.
It’s the first strike to kill US troops in the region since Hamas’ 7 October attack on Israel.
Jordan say they condemn the “terrorist attack” and will be cooperating with the US to counter terrorism and secure the border.

,1,After the fatal crash of a Russian military aircraft on Wednesday, that supposedly saw the death of 65 Ukrainian POWs, the Kremlin has released new footage of the crash scene.
The aircraft, which experts suspect was shot down by Ukrainian forces, came down over Belgorod, a rural area just north of the Russian border with Ukraine. Russian authorities labelled the incident as a terrorist attack and a totally monstrous act. Meanwhile Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for an international investigation into the crash.
Soon after the Russian reports emerged several Ukrainian news outlets reported that the plane might have been brought down by an anti aircraft missile. The outlets, however, removed the reports not long after. Russian authorities have claimed that the aircraft was en-route to a prisoner exchange before it was shot down, killing all 74 people on board, including six crew members, three Russian servicemen and 65 prisoners of war.
Ukrainian officials have poured cold water on the claims, saying that while a prisoner exchange was due to happen on Wednesday it was later called off. Airforce officials also said that Moscow did not request safe passage for the aircraft for a certain length of time, as it has with previous prisoner exchanges.
Adding to the mystery, some have claimed there is scant evidence of dozens of POWs ever being on the plane. While Ukrainian officials have variously suggested that the military cargo plane was transporting missiles, or possibly high-ranking Russian officers. However, there's little evidence to support these claims.

,1,The Houthis claim they have attacked a group of US ships, scoring a “direct hit” against a warship.
This is the first time the Houthis have claimed to have successfully attacked a US warship. The US says two cargo ships and a US Navy escort came under missile attack, but that no damage was reported.
The Houthis have been attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea for weeks. They claim they are supporting Hamas in Gaza by only targeting ships bound for Israel. But the US and UK said the attacks are ‘indiscriminate’ and threaten all international shipping through the Suez Canal.
A US-led joint international naval task force is patrolling the Red Sea in an attempt to limit further attacks. After the most recent Houthi attack a few days ago, the US and UK launched a second wave of strikes across Yemen. There are fears that the two sides risk being locked into a cycle of retaliatory attacks, that may further escalate the conflict.

,1,This huge fire was caused by a vehicle collision in the centre of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital.
A truck carrying 60 tons of liquefied natural gas crashed and exploded, causing a fireball which set a nearby 12-storey building ablaze.
Six people were killed, including three firefighters, while at least 11 more were injured.
Hundreds of firefighters worked into the early hours of the morning to extinguish the flames.
Locals are left questioning why a truck carrying such a dangerous load was allowed into a residential neighbourhood.

,1,Monday was the deadliest day for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) since the start of their ground invasion of Gaza. Twenty-four Israeli soldiers died, with twenty-one of those killed in a single explosion.
The deaths come as the IDF ramps up its assault on Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Israel claims senior Hamas military leaders are hiding somewhere in the city.
Much of the fighting is centred around several hospitals in the area. Israel claims militants are fighting from inside the hospital, a claim Hamas denies.
The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza says almost 200 Palestinians have been killed in the last day. Khan Younis is one of the places many people in northern Gaza fled to during last year’s Israeli offensive in the north.
As the battle for the city has intensified, thousands have once again been forced to flee. But with Khan Younis now encircled by the IDF, many are now effectively trapped in the warzone.

,1,The US and UK have launched a fresh wave of strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.
Some of the strikes were carried out using British Typhoon jets launched from a military base in Cyprus. It’s been reported that warship and submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles were also used by the US Navy.
The strikes come hours after the Houthis announced they had attacked a US-flagged cargo ship in the Red Sea. The Houthis claim they are supporting Hamas in Gaza by targeting ships supplying Israel. But British Foreign Secretary David Cameron rejected that claim, saying the attacks are indiscriminate.
After the first wave of US and UK strikes earlier this month the Houthis went on to attack another 12 ships in the Red Sea. The question now is whether this latest wave of strikes on Houthi military targets will prove more effective, or if they simply risk further escalating the regional conflict.

,1,This is the moment relatives of Israeli hostages held in Gaza stormed into a government meeting in Jerusalem.
The group disrupted a Finance Committee meeting in the Knesset, yelling “get up from your chairs!”.
Some 130 hostages remain prisoners of Hamas in Gaza, months after they were first seized. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is coming under increasing pressure from within Israel to bring those hostages home safely.
A previous prisoner swap deal between Hamas and Israel saw the release of 105 hostages in November. But Netanyahu rejected Hamas’ most recent offer: that would see Israeli troops withdraw and Hamas retain power in Gaza.
The Hamas-run Health Ministry estimates more than 25,000 people have now been killed in Gaza, and even Israel’s closest allies, such as the United States, are increasingly clear that the war in Gaza cannot continue indefinitely.

,1,Nikki Haley has questioned whether Donald Trump was mentally capable of serving as president again on Saturday after he repeatedly seemed to confuse her with former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a campaign speech.
Trump mistakenly claimed that Haley was in charge of Capitol security on Jan. 6th 2021, when a mob of his supporters stormed the building seeking to stop the certification of his loss to Democrat Joe Biden.
But a special House committee empaneled to probe the attack found no evidence to support the claim against Pelosi.

José Alberto García Vilano, with the alias ‘La Kena’, was seized in an upmarket shopping plaza on the outskirts of Monterrey.
He allegedly leads the Los Ciclones faction of the Gulf Cartel, one of the largest drug-smuggling organisations in Mexico.
Vilano’s cartel was linked to the kidnapping of four US citizens in March 2023, who crossed the border from Texas to Matamoros for cosmetic surgery.
Americans Zindell Brown and Shaeed Woodard were killed, while a female bystander was also killed by a stray bullet.
After Vilano’s arrest, Mexican authorities said he was “one of the main targets of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)”.

,1,An analysis of more than 150 photos and videos taken since the devastating October 7th attack on Israel shows that Hamas has assembled an arsenal of weapons from around the world. This is despite a 17-year blockade across the disputed territory that was aimed at stopping such a massive military build-up.
Evidence shows Palestinian militants using a range of weapons and artillery including North Korean and Bulgarian built rocket propelled grenades, Chinese launchers for anti-aircraft missiles and Iranian sniper rifles capable of firing deadly .50mm caliber rounds.
