From Englewood to Woodlawn, this stretch of the South Side has witnessed decades of street wars, poverty, and political neglect — a battleground shaped by Chicago’s complex gang history. Neighborhoods around 63rd & King Drive, Cottage Grove, and St. Lawrence were once home to some of the city’s most recognized street organizations, including sets tied to the Black Disciples and Gangster Disciples, whose internal conflicts defined the “South Side war zone” era of the 2000s–2010s.
Out of that same soil also grew some of Chicago’s most influential rappers and cultural voices — from legends like Chief Keef, Lil Durk, and King Von, who put O’Block and 63rd Street on the map worldwide, to newer generations trying to tell their side of the story through music, entrepreneurship, and mentorship.
But today, a different movement is rising.
The Wolf Pack Youth Football Program, based around Jackson Park and connected to Hyde Park High School, is rewriting the narrative.
