,Nasa revealed its X-59 aircraft on Friday, 12 January, as part of the agency's Quesst mission to make commercial supersonic flight possible. It is the first time the public will see the painted aircraft, which will be unveiled during a ceremony hosted by prime contractor Lockheed Martin Skunk Works in Palmdale, California. Nasa has described the X-59 as the "centerpiece" of its Quesst mission to study sound and help reduce the sonic boom made by supersonic flight to a sonic "thump." Sonic booms, which happen when the shock waves from an object traveling through the air faster than the speed of sound merge together before they reach the ground, generate enormous amounts of sound energy at around 110 decibels - comparable to the sound of an explosion or a thunderclap. After the aircraft undergoes assembly and testing, Nasa's Quesst team will select several US communities to fly the X-59 and gather data on how people perceive the sound it produces. That data will then be sent to international regulators for analysis to potentially adjust current rules that prohibit commercial supersonic flight over land. ,Rishi Sunak’s premiership has been rocked by the resignation of immigration minister Robert Jenrick after the PM failed to appease Tory right-wingers with his emergency Rwanda legislation. Home secretary James Cleverly unveiled a bill in the Commons to “disapply” the UK Human Rights Act in a bid to stop British judges from blocking the deportation of asylum seekers. But the embattled Tory leader has not been able to head off a revolt by MPs on the right of the party, who are furious that the PM chose not to opt out of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). A number of Israeli hostages have been released from Gaza in a deal with Hamas, and have been transferred to the Egyptians, Israeli media has reported. The 13 women and children were handed over to the Red Cross earlier this afternoon, before making their way to the Rafah crossing. This comes after the first captives were released since the four-day ceasefire with Israel has begun, with 12 Thai hostages crossing the border to safety under a deal negotiated with Egypt. Despite this, the Israeli military warned civilians that the “war is not over” and will continue, with the ceasefire aimed at facilitating the exchange of Hamas hostages and Palestinian prisoners. The four-day ceasefire began at 7am on Friday, and Qatar’s foreign ministry said 13 women and children taken hostage by Hamas on 7 October would be released via Egypt at 4pm – the first of at least 50 captives set to be freed under the deal. Increased aid for Palestinians will also start to enter Gaza “as soon as possible”, it said. Israel will simultaneously release 24 women and 15 teenage boys held in military jails, Palestine’s commissioner for prisoners said.
