,1,💬 Politics and toxicity seem to be rampant at work these days.
So do you leave or continue experiencing the wrath?💔
Let's dissect this topic today.
There are 3 distinct viewpoints on politics:
1️⃣ Machiavellian:
The belief is that politics is a necessary evil to gain power and succeed. Often involves manipulative behavior or withholding of information. This viewpoint encourages the thinking that success is a zero-sum game.
2️⃣ Idealistic:
The belief is that politics is a negative force that undermines teamwork and productivity. A workplace should be focused on merit and performance, rather than personal relationships and politics.
3️⃣ Pragmatic:
The belief is those office politics exists but the focus is on working together, not against. Understand others' motivations, build relationships and coalitions, and work to negotiate solutions to conflicts.
Usually, I have treaded between 2️⃣ and 3️⃣ .
🔥 Over the last several years, I have asked myself the question "Is toxicity worth the promotions, higher title, or money 💰?"
I have come to realize that there is a tax either way. It costs to stay because your mental health, self-confidence, or overall health can take a beating AND it also costs to leave because it takes energy and effort to find another job.
Here are the 5 questions I ask myself to protect myself from toxicity, politics, or microaggressions:
1. What are my absolute non-negotiables from the job?
2. Be objective. Evaluate if the words or behavior are plain toxic or if am I missing something.
3. Is my work giving me energy or sucking out every ounce of energy and joy I have?
4. Do I have financial resources for a minimum of 6 months to leave without another job?
5. If I decide to stay, how can I be intentional about 1, 2, and 3? Not all fights are worth fighting. Guard 3 with life
Hope this helps anyone experiencing a toxic workplace. Stay strong and keep your chin high! Sending lots of positive vibes and strength to you! 💪🌟
