My name is Derek Lambert & Once, I was a passionate born-again Christian, devoted to converting the world to my faith. I believed humanity was lost in a fallen world, destined for hell, and that Christianity held the only truth—the only salvation. This first installment dives headfirst into my journey and tackles a key debate: Did Dionysus turn water into wine long before the New Testament was written? Michael Jones of @InspiringPhilosophy confidently claims that this connection doesn’t exist before the 3rd century AD, dismissing critics with a resounding "Shut up!" But does the evidence really support him? I take a deep dive into the sources—beyond the Bible, beyond Christian apologetics—to uncover the truth behind these claims.

This course comes down to a single issue: Was Jesus connected to, familiar with, or in any ways influenced by, the Jewish sect who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls? And around this central focus we will explore a whole variety of related topics, such as:
What are the Dead Sea scrolls?
How were the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered, dated, and interpreted early on?
Were the Essenes the group responsible for writing the Dead Sea Scrolls?
Who were the Essenes and what were their beliefs?
Was John the Baptist likely connected to the DSS (Dead Sea Scrolls) group?
Are there close similarities between the Jesus movement and the DSS group—how many and how significant?
What about sharp differences between the Jesus movement and the DSS group?
If the movement lasted until the Jewish Roman War in 66-73CE, was it possible that the Jesus movement and the DSS group had knowledge of each other?
How different are the Pharisees and the Sadducees from the DSS group and the Jesus movement?

In this course, our primary focus is on a direct engagement with the Dead Sea Scroll texts. Our emphasis is not on delving into theories about the group but rather on a meticulous examination of the content within the Scrolls themselves. ,1,Most Christians read the New Testament and listen to their teachers about Jesus miracles believing that they are historical acts from the 1st century. Some go further and think miracles are still happening today, but what may come as a shock to most Christians is that Jesus wasn't the first or only miracle worker. In fact, there are several other miracle workers who were far more popular in the Greek and Roman world at the time the New Testament was being written. These Gods include Hercules, Ascepius and Isis, but that's not all. There were also several mortal men we call hero's who also "supposedly" performed miracles according to their sources. These hero's include Pythagoras & his disciple Empedocles, King Pyrrhus, Caesar Augustus, Vespasian, Apollonius of Tyana, Asclepiades, Moses, Elijah and Elisha. We literally go over the primary sources which you can go see for yourself. Many of these Gods and heroes raised the dead, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, mobility to the crippled, and health to the diseased. This seems to be a well established trope within the broader Greek and Roman world from which Christianity was birthed.
Our goal is to level out the playing field of miraculous claims and show the Christians who insist on their Jesus being the only one to have performed such miracles, that they need to contend with the obvious fact that this isn't the case. The Greek and Roman world was flooding with tales of Gods and heroes who performed extra-ordinary deeds. I think this path of learning can help defang fundamentalism and help people appreciate the deeper meaning of these stories and why they were written in the first place. This documentary is setting out to place Jesus in his historical, cultural & literary context. Put another way, it would be odd if the stories of Jesus didn't have miracle tales. This is what you did to your hero's & gods at this time and place in the world.
We all are born, live a life which is often full of struggles, diseases and hard to get through, then we die. The miracle stories touch on the deepest issues all humans have to experience in some ways. We should recognize that the story is what is ultimately where the meaning is.

The second-century Syrian writer Lucian, in his How to Write History, provided an all- the-more-strict set of standards, complaining of panegyric and encomiastic embellishment in renditions of persons of power, Roman rulers typically. He wrote “History cannot include a lie anymore than the windpipe can tolerate anything entering it while swallowing.” Lucian, Quomodo historia conscribenda sit 7. ,1,Christian apologists, such as Lydia McGrew, claim that little connections between the Gospels actually prove they are historical accounts of the life, deeds, and even the miracles of Jesus. Not only does this claim end up running against the last century of biblical studies, the methods are not sound. If we really want to follow the logic of "undesigned coincidences", we are just as well justified in believing in Buddhism and fantasy novels.
In this discussion, Dr. Aaron Adair will show the underlying problems with the entire logic of undesigned coincidences, and then we get into a story from the East that is just as good, if not better, than the Gospels when it comes to the exactly same criteria. By the end, will you have reason to praise Jesus, or should you switch to praising the Monkey King, and his Japanese variant: Goku?

By centering our investigation around this central issue, we will embark on an exploration of a wide range of related topics, shedding light on the historical and theological context of the time. This course comes down to a single issue: Was Jesus connected to, familiar with, or in any ways influenced by, the Jewish sect who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls? And around this central focus we will explore a whole variety of related topics, such as:
What are the Dead Sea scrolls?
How were the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered, dated, and interpreted early on?
Were the Essenes the group responsible for writing the Dead Sea Scrolls?
Who were the Essenes and what were their beliefs?
Was John the Baptist likely connected to the DSS (Dead Sea Scrolls) group?
Are there close similarities between the Jesus movement and the DSS group—how many and how significant?
What about sharp differences between the Jesus movement and the DSS group?
If the movement lasted until the Jewish Roman War in 66-73CE, was it possible that the Jesus movement and the DSS group had knowledge of each other?
How different are the Pharisees and the Sadducees from the DSS group and the Jesus movement?

In this course, our primary focus is on a direct engagement with the Dead Sea Scroll texts. Our emphasis is not on delving into theories about the group but rather on a meticulous examination of the content within the Scrolls themselves. By the conclusion of this course, you will have gained a profound understanding of the fundamental aspects necessary to embark on more in-depth explorations in the realm of biblical studies.
