"The Case for Equity," a new video series from Harvard Kennedy School and the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy, will explore equity in a variety of contexts, including health care, economics, education and more. HKS faculty experts will draw on the latest research to help you understand what kinds of policies will succeed or fail in making a more equitable society.

Leadership positions in the U.S. are disproportionately held by graduates of a few highly selective private colleges. Could such colleges — which currently have many more students from high-income families than low-income families — increase the socioeconomic diversity of America’s leaders by changing their admissions policies?
In this video, HKS Professor David Deming discusses his research with Professors Raj Chetty of Harvard and John N. Friedman of Brown University, which explores the ways that admissions policies have a cascading effect on the diversity, or lack thereof, at the top of the income scale.
This research was conducted as part of Opportunity Insights, a project based at Harvard University, whose mission is to identify barriers to economic opportunity and develop scalable solutions that will empower people throughout the United States to rise out of poverty and achieve better life outcomes.

On this episode of Behind the Book, we'll take a look at Lauren Brodsky's new book, "Because Data Can't Speak for Itself: A Practical Guide to Telling Persuasive Policy Stories," co-authored with David Chrisinger.

,1,The term "redlining" refers to the practice by banks of excluding Black and Brown Americans from receiving loans to buy homes and make improvements to their communities. Redlining arose during the Great Depression, when the federal government sought to boost homeownership by encouraging banks to lend to more Americans. Many neighborhoods, specifically those with majority Black and Brown residents, were deemed undeserving of these loans. Though redlining was made illegal by the Fair Housing Act, the effects of this practice still reverberate to this day.
In this video, Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Ford Foundation Professor of History, Race, and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and director of the Institutional Antiracism and Accountability Project, provides background on the history and legacy of redlining.

,1,Transition Term was created in the fall of 2018 as an experiential learning
program to provide HKS students with a paid fellowship during January break to support newly elected governors, mayors, and county executives as they assumed office. Launched and run by the Taubman Center for State and Local Government, the program was actually first proposed by students eager for an opportunity to work in government.
Statistics from the program are impressive: It has seen 152 student fellows participate in 51 state and local government administrations, and in 2023, the year with the largest number of participants to date, the program placed 54 students with six governors, one county executive, and 10 mayors throughout the country. Starting in 2022, the Taubman Center connected with the National Governors Association to help place students with incoming gubernatorial administrations. But the story of T-Term isn’t just about successful outcomes. It is also about student ingenuity, institutional support, and community investment.

,1,In the United States, apprenticeships are often associated with particular industries like the building trades. But in Switzerland and other parts of Europe, apprenticeships are common in many other industries. In fact, 70% of Swiss high school students participate in that country's apprenticeship program as part of their high school education. Can a similar model work in the U.S.? In this video, a team at Harvard Kennedy School's Project on Workforce discusses recently published research which used data from CareerWise Colorado, an organization that places high school students in two- and three-year apprenticeships, to determine whether such a program could help students and employers in the American labor market.

,1,Workers without college degrees are being left behind. Since the 1980s, the gap between those at the top of the income spectrum and everyone else has been widening, due to a number of phenomena, including increased competition from China, the decline of the coal industry, and automation. These seismic changes have laid bare the shortcomings of the American welfare state, which can help workers absorb short term job loss but leaves them in a precarious state for longer term unemployment.
Solving this problem will require new ways of thinking and a better understanding of how global economic forces affect local economies. That has been the focus of Gordon Hanson, Peter Wertheim Professor of Urban Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. Professor Hanson says that the economic consensus in the 1980s and 1990s, which assumed that free trade would lead to massive growth for everyone, was wildly optimistic. To address regional economic divides, Professor Hanson says policymakers will have to consider approaches that would have once been thought too economically intrusive.
In collaboration with HKS Professor Dani Rodrik, Professor Hanson has recently launched Reimagining the Economy, a project focused on solving these problems. You can read more about it at hks.harvard.edu/centers/wiener/programs/economy.
