,1,Should the U.S. government be actively working against “disinformation”? After being a buzzword in political circles since Donald Trump was elected, the Biden administration has finally gotten around to half heartedly caring about it. A few weeks ago, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would be setting up a “Disinformation Governance Board,” but only three weeks later it was suddenly announced that the board would be basically shut down.
The woman who was chosen to lead this group had written extensively about how online disinformation campaigns work, as well as worked in multiple non-profits. She became the target of serial harassment by right wing agitators, who drove her offline and pressured the Biden Administration into tucking its tail between its legs and giving up entirely.
It’s a beautiful little tempest in a teacup that surmises the Biden Administration and centrist politics: roll out a policy that you promised on the campaign trail, but be prepared to ditch it entirely when the going gets tough. Especially from far right actors.
