,1,This is the devastating aftermath of the New Year’s Day earthquake in Japan.
At least 48 people have died, with the death toll expected to rise. Authorities say they are in a “race against time” to rescue trapped survivors.
The 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit Japan’s northern coast on Monday. The quake and subsequent fires damaged hundreds of buildings. Around 57,000 people were evacuated, and tsunami warnings were issued across northern Japan.
Those tsunami warnings have now been lifted, but Japan’s Prime Minister says the crisis is far from over.
The Japanese army has now been deployed in response to the disaster. But relief efforts are being hampered by widespread damage to the road network.
