,1,The East Palestine Police Department is warning that drinking water may be "at risk" for some residents following last week's train derailment.
In a Facebook post, East Palestine Police Department officials said that the Portable Well Task Group will be knocking on doors today of the homes that have been identified as having "at risk" drinking water wells.
The news comes just days after officials gave the all-clear for residents to return to their homes following a fiery train derailment that happened on Friday, Feb. 3.

,1,Officials in Columbiana County held another briefing Thursday afternoon in the aftermath of last week's train derailment in East Palestine that released potentially hazardous chemicals into the air.
The press conference from the county emergency management agency as well as East Palestine's mayor and fire chief comes after the evacuation order in the village was lifted on Wednesday. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine made the announcement Wednesday in conjunction with the East Palestine Fire Department and United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Earlier this week, officials conducted a controlled release of chemicals after DeWine noted the contents of vinyl chloride in five of the rail cars were "currently unstable and could potentially explode, causing deadly disbursement of shrapnel and toxic fumes." Due to these risks, all residents within a mile of the accident were ordered to leave under threat of arrest.
Though citizens are now allowed to return home, several are still nervous about doing so due to concerns over air quality. The EPA says all of their air and water readings inside the evacuation zone have come back normal, but people can still request personal readings in their homes by calling (330) 849-3913, and Columbiana County EMA Director Peggy Clark says roughly 300 such screenings have taken place so far.
"It takes about a half an hour to do each home," Clark explained. "They currently have four teams that are working 10 hours a day, so they're going to try to do that as quickly as they can, but please be patient."
In recent days, much of the attention has turned to the Norfolk Southern Railway, whose freight train was the one involved in the wreck. A lawsuit filed by residents this week accuses the company of negligence, and Mayor Trent R. Conway claimed he has talked to U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson and Sen. JD Vance about holding them accountable throughout the process.
"We're going to hold their feet to the fire," Conway said. He and others added the railroad has its own contractors on-site and that residents can request coverage of expenses by calling (800) 230-7049.
Still, local leaders have expressed their own frustrations with Norfolk Southern, including railroad crews clearing equipment from the crash scene with trucks that could potentially spread hazardous material to East Palestine roads. While the mayor says he was promised company street sweepers would rectify that issue "immediately," he also acknowledged his anger at NS now running trains on the line as soon as the order expired.
Neil Fischer reports: https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/local/ohio/ohio-train-derailment-update-columbiana-county-officials-briefing-evacuation-order-lifted/95-bc9ee24c-00f4-4d93-befc-cce1bb48dcf2
,1,With concerns of a potential explosion connected to the train derailment in Columbiana County, a "controlled release" of chemicals inside the railroad cars has begun on Monday afternoon.
It came as Gov. Mike DeWine said the contents of five rail cars are “currently unstable and could potentially explode, causing deadly disbursement of shrapnel and toxic fumes.”
The apparent release occurred around 4:30 p.m., with residents and 3News reporters reporting a large explosion along with a massive plum of smoke billowing to the sky.
So how does the controlled release work? Scott Deutsch, an official with the Norfolk Southern Railroad, said it's a process that could take one to three hours.
Deutsch said it begins by creating a small hole in the tank car.
“This will allow the material to come out of the tank car," the official explained. "It will go into a pit and trench that we have dug and set up for this operation. Inside that trench will be flares lining that trench that then will light off the material.”
Just over an hour into the controlled release, smoke still covered the skies in Columbiana County.

,1,A massive train derailment in Ohio caused a fire that led to an evacuation of East Palestine.
A train derailment and resulting large fire prompted an evacuation order and a declaration of a state of emergency in an Ohio village near the Pennsylvania state line, covering the area in billows of smoke lit orange by the flames below.
About 50 cars derailed in East Palestine as a train was carrying a variety of freight from Madison, Illinois, to Conway, Pennsylvania, rail operator Norfolk Southern said in a statement Saturday. There was no immediate information about what caused the derailment. No injuries were reported.

,1,President Joe Biden commented on the Chineses Balloon flying over the US.
The Biden administration is considering a plan to shoot down a large Chinese balloon suspected of conducting surveillance on U.S. military, by bringing it down once it is above the Atlantic Ocean where the remnants could potentially be recovered, according to four U.S. officials.
The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive operation, said it was unclear whether a final decision had yet been made by President Joe Biden. In a brief remark Saturday in response to a reporter’s question about the balloon, Biden said: “We’re going to take care of it.”
The balloon was spotted Saturday morning over North Carolina as it neared the Atlantic coast.
Biden had been inclined to down the balloon over land when he was first briefed on it on Tuesday, but Pentagon officials advised against it, warning that the potential risk to people on the ground outweighed the assessment of potential Chinese intelligence gains.

,1,Police near Dayton, Ohio are investigating an alleged problem with two officers who allegedly punched a woman.
The incident happened earlier this week at a McDonald's when police were called for a report of a disorderly conduct. Body camera video released by the Butler Township Police Department shows the customer, Latinka Hancock, complaining that she did not get the extra piece of cheese that she had asked and paid for.
One officer was trying to write out a formal trespassing warning, but Hancock refused to reveal her identity. It escalated and later in the video, officers are seen handcuffing Hancock.
However, video shot by a bystander appears to show and officer punching Hancock in the face.
The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the department conducts an investigation.

,1,(AP) Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday appointed a special counsel to investigate the presence of documents with classified markings found at President Joe Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, and at an office in Washington.
The announcement followed Biden's acknowledgement Thursday morning that a document with classified markings from his time as vice president was found in his personal library, along with other documents found in his garage, It was disclosed on Monday that sensitive documents were found at the office of his former institute in Washington.
Robert Hur, the former Trump-appointed U.S. attorney in Maryland, will lead the investigation, taking over from the top Justice Department prosecutor in Chicago, John Lausch, who was earlier assigned by the department to investigate the matter. Hur is to begin his work soon.
The appointment of yet another special counsel to investigate the handling of classified documents is a remarkable turn of events, legally and politically, for a Justice Department that has spent months looking into the retention by Donald Trump of more than 300 documents with classification markings found at the former president’s Florida estate.
Though the situations are factually and legally different, the discovery of classified documents at two separate locations tied to Biden — as well as the appointment of a new special counsel — would almost certainly complicate any prosecution that the department might bring against Trump.

,1,(AP) Russian forces have carpeted Ukraine with a fresh barrage of missiles and munition-carrying drones.
The bombardment on Tuesday came a day after strikes across the country killed at least 19 people in what the U.N. human rights office described as a “particularly shocking” attack that could amount to war crimes.
Air raid warnings sounded throughout Ukraine in the morning and sent some residents back into shelters after months of relative calm in many cities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was due to address the leaders of the Group of Seven industrial powers by videoconference Tuesday.
Russia’s widespread attacks came in retaliation for a weekend explosion that damaged a bridge linking Russia to the Crimean Peninsula.

,1,President Joe Biden is sounding an alarm Thursday night about what he views as “extremist” threats to American democracy from the restive forces of Trumpism. He's aiming to reframe the November elections as part of an unceasing battle for the “soul of the nation.”
Nearly two years after he defeated Donald Trump, it's a reprise of Biden's 2020 campaign theme, casting the midterm election stakes in as dire terms as those that sent him to the Oval Office. His prime-time speech at Independence Hall in Philadelphia will lay out what he sees as the risks from those he has dubbed “ultra-MAGA Republicans” to the nation's system of government, its standing abroad and its citizens' way of life.
The explicit effort by Biden to marginalize Trump and and his “Make America Great Again” adherents marks a sharp turn for the president, who preached his desire to bring about national unity in his Inaugural address. White House officials said it reflects his mounting concern about Trump conservatives' ideological proposals and 2020 election denialism.
“MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards,” Biden is saying, according to prepared remarks released by the White House. “Backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.”
“For a long time, we’ve reassured ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it is not,” Biden says. “We have to defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Each and every one of us.”
Biden, who largely avoided even referring to “the former guy” by name during his first year in office, has grown increasingly vocal in calling out Trump personally. Now, emboldened by his party's recent legislative wins and wary of Trump's return to the headlines, Biden is sharpening his attacks.
Trump plans a rally this weekend in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Biden’s birthplace.

,1,The National Transportation Safety Board -- NTSB -- announced it's launching a special investigation into Norfolk Southern Railway's organization and safety culture.
"Given the number and significance of recent Norfolk Southern accidents, the NTSB also urges the company to take immediate action today to review and assess its safety practices, with the input of employees and others, and implement necessary changes to improve safety," NTSB said in a statement.
NTSB's announcement comes just hours after a Norfolk Southern conductor was killed after being struck by a dump truck in Cleveland early Tuesday morning. The incident marked just the latest involving Norfolk Southern since the company gained notoriety last month after one of its trains carrying hazardous materials derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, resulting in a temporary evacuation of the area and a controlled release of the chemicals on board.
One month after the Feb. 3 derailment, another Norfolk Southern train derailed in Springfield, Ohio, on March 4. NTSB said that in addition to the aforementioned incidents, it will also review a Norfolk Southern train derailment that occurred in Sandusky, Ohio, on Oct. 28, 2022, as a part of its investigation.

,1,A Norfolk Southern employee -- identified as 46-year-old Louis Shuster of Broadview Heights -- has died following an incident in Cleveland early Tuesday morning.
Cleveland police say it happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of West 3rd Street as a dump truck was "operating in a southwesterly direction with a full load of limestone approaching a stop sign at the railroad tracks."
After stopping, police say the truck -- a Caterpillar 769C -- proceeded forward and collided with the front left side of the first train car, which was operating in a southerly direction.
"The conductor was positioned outside on the front left side of the forward train car and was struck in the collision," according to Cleveland police.
Police say Shuster was pronounced dead at the scene.

,1,It has now been more than a month since the Norfolk Southern toxic Ohio train derailment in East Palestine.
As the National Transportation Safety Board continues its investigation of the Feb. 3 incident, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy joined Heather Long of the Washington Post to provide an update on the matter.
You can watch the entirety of Homendy's conversation with Long at the bottom of this story.
Over the course of the conversation, Homendy was asked for a timeline regarding the ongoing investigation into the derailment. Homendy said that she is hopeful that the investigation can wrap up within the next 12 months, but also noted that the investigation doesn't need to be finalized in order for NTSB to make recommendations.

,1,(AP / TEGNA) There is no sign of a spill after 20 cars of a Norfolk Southern cargo train derailed near Springfield. It was the second derailment of the company's trains in Ohio in a month.
"There is no indication of any injuries or risk to public health at this time," an early Sunday update from Clark County's official Facebook page said. It added that crews from Norfolk Southern, the county hazmat team, and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency each independently examined the site and found "no evidence of spillage."
Unlike the Feb. 3 derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, officials said there were no hazardous materials aboard the train. Clark County said four of the derailed cars had residual amounts of non-hazardous materials — two with diesel exhaust fluid and the other two with polyacrylamide water solution.

,1,(AP) Attorney General Merrick Garland vowed Wednesday he won't interfere with an investigation into Hunter Biden's taxes, a probe that's continuing to unfold as congressional Republicans intensify their focus on the president’s son.
Garland told the Senate Judiciary Committee he has left the matter in the hands of U.S. Attorney David Weiss, the top federal prosecutor in Delaware, who would be empowered to expand his investigation outside the state if needed.
“He has been advised he is not to be denied anything he needs,” Garland said. “I have not heard anything from that office to suggest that they are not able to do everything the U.S. Attorney wants to do.”
Garland's appearance was his first since the new Congress convened, and came against the backdrop of special counsel investigations into classified records found at the homes of former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden.

,1,(AP) The Supreme Court is taking up its first case about a federal law that is credited with helping create the modern internet by shielding Google, Twitter, Facebook and other companies from lawsuits over content posted on their sites by others.
The justices are hearing arguments Tuesday about whether the family of an American college student killed in a terrorist attack in Paris can sue Google for helping extremists spread their message and attract new recruits.
The case is the court's first look at Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, adopted early in the internet age, in 1996, to protect companies from being sued over information their users post online.
Lower courts have broadly interpreted the law to protect the industry, which the companies and their allies say has fueled the meteoric growth of the internet and encouraged the removal of harmful content.
But critics argue that the companies have not done nearly enough and that the law should not block lawsuits over the recommendations, generated by computer algorithms, that point viewers to more material that interests them and keeps them online longer.

,1,The latest with the Ohio train derailment in East Palestine.
(AP) The president of Norfolk Southern made a visit to East Palestine, Ohio, on Saturday following criticism from residents and political leaders about the company's response to the fiery derailment of a freight train carrying toxic materials earlier this month.
Fox Business reports that company president and CEO Alan Shaw told reporters Saturday he was there “to support the community” but declined further comment.
Earlier in the week, representatives of Norfolk Southern were absent from a public meeting attended by hundreds of people, with officials saying they were worried about physical threats. Gov. Mike DeWine was upset by the no-show at the Wednesday meeting and said Shaw needed to go to East Palestine and answer questions.
Norfolk Southern said in a statement Friday that it was “committed to coordinating the cleanup project and paying for its associated costs,” saying the company wanted to ensure that East Palestine’s residents and natural environment “not only recover but thrive.”
“Our company will be working tirelessly every day to get East Palestine back on its feet as soon as possible,” Shaw said in the statement. “We know we will be judged by our actions, and we are taking this accountability and responsibility very seriously.”

,1,People are just now settling back into their homes in East Palestine, but as things begin to calm down following a week of evacuations and controlled explosions, costs are continuing to pile up, including new gear at the fire department.
"I couldn't even begin to tell you, several hundred thousand dollars in air packs to get us through at this point. I placed that order today because I have to have breathing apparatus for my men," Fire Chief Keith Drabick said.
WKYC checked to see who is footing the bill. Norfolk Southern confirmed the cut a check to the city for fire gear yesterday.
But, as the orders are processed, the station still has calls coming in.
