They were both young, blonde, and in love, a seemingly normal, perfect couple. But what Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka, did in secret in the suburbs of Toronto, Canada would elicit fear and panic in young women everywhere. Known as the "Ken and Barbie Killers," because of their good looks, Bernardo and Homolka raped, tortured, and killed at least three young women.
Bernardo was a cunning and manipulative businessman who used his sales tactics to entice female victims, and his crimes only got worse when 17-year-old Homolka entered the picture. Karla Homolka was an active participant in the murders, and even participated sexually alongside and with the girls, mostly for Bernardo's affection and at his urging.
Paul Bernardo was arrested in 1993 when his DNA matched a sample from one of the rape victims. Worried that her own involvement would become known to the police, Homolka scrambled to get a lawyer and arrange a plea deal with prosecutors, an act that became known as "The deal with the devil."
Bernardo and Homolka attracted worldwide media attention when they were convicted of raping and murdering teenage girls, including Homolka's own sister, Tammy Homolka. Karla Homolka served only twelve years in prison for her part in the murders. Today, she lives a normal life with her husband and their three kids and and people are furious. Homolka has not been placed on Canada's National Sex Offenders Registry.

This sex trafficking survivor protects girls from hell she endured.
If you had a sister, or a cousin, or a niece, or a daughter and somebody was selling her, wouldn't you want something done about that? One in four women in the United States will become victims of sexual violence. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates there are between 14,500 and 17,500 victims of sex trafficking per year in the United States alone. Emmy Myers, a local survivor of sex trafficking and advocate for victims, is working to change that statistic.
Myers's pimp kept her high pretty much all of the time and used drugs as a way to keep her from protesting the arrangement. Myers was “lucky” in a sense. None of the men she slept with were violent with her. Most of them were respected, successful career-driven men. Most of them had families at home. "This is what surprises America," Myers said. "It's not these big, fat smelly gross guys. It's often very prominent men in the community. The issue isn't just something from a Hollywood movie."
Myers is the founder of Lacey's Hope Project, a Wisconsin-based project she started in memory of a close friend and fellow victim of sex trafficking. While she was fortunately rescued, Myers emphasized this could happen to anyone. Her project's goal is to help raise awareness of modern day slavery by focusing on the signs and dangers of sex trafficking and survivors' healing processes. Listen to her story and learn more. Lucas claims she was raped, tortured with a fish hook and almost stabbed to death after being sold into aristocratic pedophile ring at the age of six. She has never gone to police with her claims because she said she was scared into silence after watching kids getting killed by sadistic members as a "warning" to others.
Her family’s cleaning lady "abused and groomed her" before colluding with a relative to pimp her out to the exclusive club for drug-fuelled orgies. Her mom sold her into pimps as well. Anneke Lucas survived some of the worst atrocities known to humankind before the age of 12.
